Creighton Garson provided an enlightening historical background to the ongoing conflicts between Russia and Ukraine throughout the ages.

A recent arrival from Kyiv, Ina Stepanenko, shared the story of her family moving to safety and settling in Red Deer to be close to relatives.  She talked about the challenges to daily living as a result of the conflict- closures of businesses, frequent warning alarms, limited access to basic supplies, and concerns about safety. She and her family have found Red Deer to be a welcoming place in a time of trouble.  

Families who have left Ukraine due to the conflicts are able to access support from many agencies.   Anneke Lauwers, from Catholic Social Services, outlined the multitude of  settlement supports and services that are available to families from Ukraine.  These include providing information about health care, housing, and employment. Language testing and classes are also available.

Alla Mysko-Henke, part of the Adult Literacy Team from Red Deer Public, described the need for literacy support for newcomers.  There is currently a wait list of over 180 individuals looking to be matched with a tutor for small and large group sessions.  The demand for this service is growing.  The library also provides opportunities for Ukrainian families to gather together for social activities and fellowship.
