Bruce Buruma- The Future of Community Service

Bruce reminded us all the reason we often give when asked why we join Rotary is the opportunity to engage in service, in our communities and abroad.

The recent health check survey revealed that some members are looking for ways in which we can change the image of Rotary as being primarily a fundraiser for projects to one that allows more members to be involved in service within the community. Goals and objectives of the committee include enhancing the value and importance of community service within the club throughout the year and ensuring that projects are responsive to community needs and are able to demonstrate the impact they have had. It is also important that we increase the awareness in the community about the projects we support and the immense value created. There will an effort to support a wide range of organizations and project areas. The Community Service committee will be seeking input from members and the community regarding possible areas of need. Please check your email for the presentation and short survey from Bruce. As a club we will continue to build upon the 100 years of working within communities, local and international, to provide service to others.

Weekly Meeting Update

Darcy chaired the meeting with Sheryl K livening things up with her quips as Sarge.

A spirited version of O'Canada was led by Sheryl K in honor of Election Day.

The May Birthday (Boys) in attendance were feted by a round of Happy Birthday by all in attendance. Was that Birthday Cake that we all enjoyed for dessert today?

Rotarian of the Month

Garth O. shared that this award is given to recognize members for their outstanding achievement in club service. The winner has high ethical standards and demonstrates the 4 Way test in all they say and do. Congratulations to Don Odell. Don has been instrumental with his work with the Black Tie Bingo, online auction, and a leader in the 100 Year Celebration of Rotary gala. His involvement over the years are a testament to why he is being recognized today.

Don took a moment to congratulate the team that has worked with him on many events, recognizing that all events are a result of team work. Congratulations

50/50 at Rebels Hockey Games

Brett M shared that was a very profitable fundraising activity. During the previous year approximately $32 000 was deposited. Approximately $65 000 will be available from the proceeds of this year's activity. Thanks to all who came and volunteered their time. What a great way to develop fellowship and help the community projects at the same time.

Happy/Sad and other Fun Things

Dean W: Celebrated the wedding of his daughter- the social event of the century!! He also recommends the duo of Leann and Sheryl K as bartenders who add life to any event.

Dagmar: Thanks to Donna P for allowing her to use the booth at the Farmer's Market last Saturday to promote the tree planting event on June 3. Dagmar is also excited about her son being scouted in hockey. Thanks were also extended to the local radio stations for promoting the upcoming tree planting.

Bryan Wilson: Hike for Hospice raised $50 000 on the weekend.

Leigh: Excited about upcoming surprise trip to Disneyland courtesy of her husband in honor of her 36th birthday. She also reminded all of the Social Impact booth at the Farmer's Market that is available for non-profits to share their information. See Donna/Leigh for more details.

Harvey M.: Happy to reconnect with Ron Whittemore and confirm that he continues to enjoy and support Rotary despite not being able to attend meetings.

Shelley R: Great to see club members out at the Green Deer event on Sunday. Kudos to the city for how clean the area was that we were assigned to maintain. Celebrating the graduation of her son at Red Deer Polytechnic- first time she gets to be an audience member!!

Darcy M: June 6 Business Summit taking place at Holiday Inn in Gasoline Alley sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce. Please see Darcy for list of speakers and event details.

Leann S: Travelled out to Blue River BC to celebrate her son's 25 birthday. Great appreciation given to those who work on the pipelines for extended periods of time. Celebrating today being a mom for 28 years.

Robert L: Enjoyed cruise to Hawaii to celebrate 37th wedding anniversary. Reminded all to save tomorrow's Advocate as it contains 4 additional articles about Rotary in Red Deer.

Sheryl K: Reminded all to vote. Celebrating that women only obtained the right to vote in 1916 in the provinces of Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. In the major scheme of things that is not that long ago!!!

Patricia: Ride for Respect event on July 29 in support of the Sexual Assault Centre. Vendor table opportunities available, volunteer opportunities available.

Vocational Talk

We welcome Holly Glassford. Holly has been with the RCMP for 25 years and is currently the officer in charge in Red Deer. She has welcomed the opportunity that the RCMP has provided for her to travel and experience living in many areas, including Tuktoyuktoyuk, Iqualit, Yellowknife, and the Maritimes before moving to Red Deer with her husband, son and daughter. Holly spoke of her passion for volunteering and the involvement of her family. She also shared stories of the importance of creating opportunities to learn from those around her in order to more fully understand their actions, a lesson she learned in many ways living in remote communities with different peoples.

We look forward to seeing Holly at meetings and at many service activities during the upcoming years.

District Conference 2023

The conference was held in Lethbridge in the beginning of May.

We won 2 awards! The Glen Peacock Award (medium size club) was awarded for Outstanding Rotary Clubs that best reflect the themes of Rotary International and the District. The James Wheeler Davidson Membership Award was given to the club with the greatest percentage increase in net new members. Congratulations to all!!! Robert Lampard shared that this is the first awards that we have received since 1997!

Congratulations also to Victor and Thelma Maris on becoming part of the Arch Klumph Society for their contributions to Rotary International Foundation. They have demonstrated putting service before self in all that they do. Their quiet contributions do not go unrecognized..

Did You Know?

In perusing the archives it was discovered that the first women to belong to the Rotary Club of Red Deer were Gloria Beck and Gail Surkan. They changed the direction of the club in 1991 and we have not looked back since. Please click on the link to read an article from the Advocate on the last meeting that was held at the Club Cafe.

Awards

The return of the Sniveler and Whiner award is official. Garth has located the silver trophy (it needs some minor repair). Many attendees at the meeting proudly pointed out their engraved names on this prime trophy. Who will be this year's winner?

Let's Ride a Bike

Please join us on Saturday June 10th from 1-3 pm as we launch our Summer "Cycling Without Age" in Capstone. We are looking for pilots and passengers. The more the merrier! RSVP if you wish to get involved, go for a ride, or just check it out.

Fellow Rotarians....I am pleased to announce that Aliesha Shuparsky will serve as the Social Director on the Board for the coming year. Aliesha brings her 5 plus years of Rotary experience in Kamloops and now Red Deer and is eager to take on the new challenge. Aliesha will be reaching out to the membership for those that would like to be on the Social Committee and help develop an activity plan outside of our regular Monday meetings.
