Meeting Notes - March 18, 2013

Super to see great attendance at the March 18th meeting. After Pat Romerman's welcome, Glen Labuc took the stage as Sarge with questionable applause. He then delivered a questionable golf joke.
Some of the "Happy/Sad Bucks" highlights included...an announcement by Jim McPhereson of the upcoming Rotary Mac and Cheese Dinner, reminding everyone that it's a Rotary Event and everyone needs to do their best to sell and buy tables/tickets. The date is June 5th.
Jim McPhereson and Gloria Beck also did an astounding job at this year's Red Deer Hospice Society 2nd Annual Celebrity Dance Off raising $70,000 between them.
Save the date of Thursday May 2nd for the Red Deer Citizen of the Year Spring Gala. The speaker will be Terry Evanshen, CFL Hall of Famer. You can wear something semi-formal from "whatever era you like best". Also be sure to get your donated bottles of wine or cash donations in before April 29th. Don't miss out on your chance to donate a silent auction item, and there are also still some community builder opportunities! Talk to Dallas or watch your email inbox.
Last week, ten people signed up to serve on committee and there are still some spaces left. If you wish to serve, get in touch with Blaine Newton.
Our exchange student Anni won the 50-50 draw and says she's going to use the 70 dollars to buy shoes!
Glen then closed the business portion of the meeting with a spectacularly accurate joke about women being perfect.
During the program portion of the meeting, we were fortunate to hear about the success of the Grade 12 Class at Notre Dame. Each year the graduating class chooses a charity to support the community and the religious side of the school. They began a campaign in October to raise money for the Suicide Information Education Services which serves Red Deer and the surrounding area. They set a goal of $45,000 and when the money was tallied on the weekend, they found they had raised almost triple that amount at $128,000. Representing the class were president Evan Macleod, Brasilian exchange student (Rotary Club of Red Deer East) Julia Katzner, and teacher Todd Niven. The students raised money through everything from bake sales to a "Race for your Life" event held Saturday March 16th in Red Deer. That event alone attracted hundreds of students. 38 student groups at Notre Dame raised $2500 each just to take part. Julia commented "When people say our youth is lost, it isn't. We had hundreds from our school working for a common goal. We didn't stop, we didn't sleep, we made a difference."
Next week, the PR committee is going to give an update on all the changes that have been happening to the Red Deer Rotary Club website and how it will work for YOU!

There will be no April 1st meeting because of the Easter holiday weekend.
