Rotary Meeting June 24 2013
On his last stint as Rotating Past President, Ken Johnston led the members in applause for "Eight Finger Mel" (McKnight) who accompanied us on piano for O Canada and Grace, despite having two fingers taped together. We know she could have done it with her hands tied behind her back. Way to go, Mel!
Ken also told the members that the Canmore Rotary Club is accepting donations for their foundation to assist with flooding issues. You can check out their site on Clubrunner. It was also mentioned later in the meeting that TD will be accepting donations for one month for flood relief.
Glen LaBuc was today's Sarge. Enough said.
Guests of Rotary: Stefan Lapalme (outbound student) Not guests of Rotary, but new members Grace Zhang and Janice Kong were also recognized. Visiting Rotarian: Michael Dawe.
Happy/Sad Bucks included: Dr. Lynne Paradis had some happy bucks for being recognized as RDC's distinguished alumnus. Gloria Beck had happy announcement bucks for the Olds College Car Auction raising 1.2 million dollars. Our new President Darcy Mykytyshyn had happy bucks for his little one Sam's 3rd birthday, a cat surviving the Calgary flooding, and the news that the next time he is at Rotary he will likely have an announcement about the newest addition to his family.
During Music Trivia we learned:
1. Chaz Chandler was never a Beatle.
2. AHA is from Norway.
3. Heartbreak Hotel was Elvis' first hit.
4. Elvis got in trouble for swiveling his hips on the Milton Berle show.
5. The Juno Awards started in 1971.
6. Iron Butterfly was not part of the British Invasion
7. We are not the music aficionados we thought we were.
9. The money raised during Music Trivia went to flood relief.
Our outbound student Stefan Lapalme had the 50-50 ticket, but pulled the Queen of Hearts.
Sarge Glen LaBuc ended with a joke that was ROUGH!
Ken Johnston formally welcomed new members Grace Zhang and Janice Kong. He also mentioned that Melody McKnight had quietly applied for a community spirit grant for Rotary, and the club has received $4500 in funding for her efforts! Again, well done.
Ken then welcomed our new President Darcy Mykytyshyn and presented Darcy with the Presidents Pin and gavel.
During his address, our new President thanked Ken Johnston for stepping in and filling the gap when former president Terry Belisle moved to Grande Prairie. Well done, Ken, and thank you! Darcy also mentioned that the next version of the three-year strategic plan is in the works and the board will be meeting with Ron Woodward mid-July. If you have any suggestions or areas of focus please let any member of the executive know the in the next few weeks.
