Rotary Club Notes for June 17 2013
Our rotating President was Ken Johnston pinch-hitting for Leroy Ehnes, who had a date with his roofing contractor.
Our Sergeant at Arms was Janice Wing, wing-it Janice! (Ray Dunham was fined five bucks for that witty interchange).
Guests of Rotary were Stefan Lapalme (outgoing student), Kevin Bradshaw, Grace Zhang, Janice Kong, and Anni (our inbound student). It was Anni's 18th birthday on Friday and she received a rousing Rotary rendition of Happy Birthday. It is also Blaine Dushanek's birthday (he is not 18). Visiting Rotarians: Michael Dawe
Happy/Sad Bucks included: Melody McKnight, chair of the planning committee for the Lieutenant Governor's Arts Awards Gala had happy bucks to thank the City of Red Deer and RDC for their parts in the June 15th event, which went "without a hitch". Gloria Beck had announcement dollars about the upcoming vintage car auction for the Olds College Centennial. Marty Skinner told the Club that the Citizen of the Year committee may have more information about this past year's event within a week to 10 days.
Anni won the 50-50 draw, pulled the joker, and won 100 dollars...Happy Birthday Anni -- the cheque is in the mail!
The Sarge wrapped up the business portion by honouring Father's Day with three quotes from Bill Cosby. "Fatherhood is pretending the present you love most is soap-on-a-rope", "I guess the real reason that my wife and I had children is the same reason that Napoleon had for invading Russia: it seemed like a good idea at the time.", and "Poets have said that the reason to have children is to give yourself immortality. Immortality? Now that I have five children, my only hope is that they are all out of the house before I die."
Anni reported on her "awesome hiking trip" and thanked Rotary for sending her. She also celebrated her birthday in Calgary, and thanked Bre Fitzpatrick for taking her there. Anni also thanked the Club for having her here in Red Deer and presented a flag from her home town in Finland to Ken Johnston.
Today's program was a "senior motivational talk" by Ken Johnston, who was charming and funny. He talked about the how the connections in Rotary can sometimes work quietly behind the scenes to help members of the community. Thank you, Ken.
