Rotary Club Meeting - December 9th 2013

Spending time in the Chair's role was Marc St. Pierre.

ImageDon O'Dell was Sarge, who fought the Sarge's image problem by wearing a Santa hat but then quoted something Dickensian.

Guests:  Jean Ann Davis, Leo Dechamps, Jeanne Davis, Peter Clemens, RJ Steenstra, Christine Moore

Rotarians who did not have tickets for that evening's Christmas function, did not volunteer for the Salvation Army Kettles, or did not donate to the Kettles had to cough up $5.  Also, kudos to Blaine Duchanek for arranging the volunteers for the Kettles. Morris Flewwelling brought news of the unveiling of Michael Dawe's newest history book.  It is available for Christmas giving. Glen LaBuc and Ray Dunham were then asked to each lead half the room in an "Obscure Christmas Lyric" game.  Ray Dunham's side won with an insurmountable lead.

Sad/Happy Bucks included:  Melody McKnight with some astonishing bucks for having a pickup truck drive into her house.  The suspect is still on the lam.  There were announcement bucks for next week's Christmas Luncheon, anyone with items to give away can bring them to the meeting.  There were some proud parent bucks for the Alberta Winter Games as well as high-flying for West Jet.  Garth Olson graciously donated five beautiful calendars and a premium bottle of wine. He then drew five names of people who had contributed to the wine tree at the Black Tie Bingo.  The winners were Ray Dunham, Jim Slipp, Marc St. Pierre, Glen LaBuc, and Bob Mills.  Blaine Newton had some "shameful dollars" for being late to work the Salvation Army Kettles. Robert Mitchell had happy bucks for the third annual 5K Santa Shuffle which he ran on Saturday, in -40 temperatures.  Ian Warwick had sad bucks to share the news that Victoria Debonnet's grandfather had passed away.  (Victoria is our inbound student)

50 50 - Ray Rogers had the lucky ticket, but didn't win.

Jack Panteluk provided an update on the Community Service Committee.  The Fall grant period wrapped up at the end of November.

ImageOur Guest speaker was RJ Steenstra, CEO of the Red Deer Airport.  RJ updated the Club on the great work that is happening at the airport, including new flights.  He reminded everyone that parking is free, and the best way to spread the word about the airport, is to make use of the new services.  Thanks RJ!

Next meeting:  Monday December 16th at 12 PM.  North Hill Inn  -- Christmas Luncheon, bring your spouse!
