Rotary Meeting Notes: August 26 2013

Chair Darcy Mykytyshyn began the meeting by asking our new inbound student from Belgium, Victoria, for an update.  Victoria has just been to Banff for hiking, a picnic, and a trip to the hot springs.  She also thanked everyone who sent her an email for her birthday, which was last week.  The Club sang Happy Birthday to all August Rotarians, and enjoyed some cake.

Our Sarge today was Ray Dunham who went remarkable easy on the assembled crowd.

Guests of Rotary:  Graham Hicks of Edmonton, Charity Dyke from the City of Red Deer, Ralph Ward.

Visiting Rotarians:  Ray McBeth, Victoria (inbound student)

Happy/Sad Bucks:  Dick McDonnell had some happy "work in progress" bucks introducing Charity Dyke who updated the Club on the status of the Rotary Clock in the downtown.  Charity says the entire internal mechanism of the clock has been changed from plastic to brass over the past year, and internally the clock works fine.  In the summer months, the plexi-glass faces of the clock expand, halting the movement of the clock hands.  The faces will be replaced with curved ones, so as not to halt the progress of time, as it were.  Phil Maczuga had some suggestions bucks to ask people to sign the Finnish flag before it is sent to Anni.  It will be at the back of the room at the next meeting.  Bre Fitzpatrick had happy dollars for everyone who stepped up to the plate to provide silent auction items for the MS Society on September 12th.  

50-50 Draw - Victoria was the assumed winner, but did not pull a winning card.

Our Sarge told us a couple of stories about the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and the pitfalls of using cell phones in public.  

Darcy had a couple of housekeeping issues before our speaker.  There is a Rotary "Swag" catalogue at the back of the room for anyone interested in purchasing items.  There will also be no meeting next week because of the Labour Day Holiday.

Guest Speaker:  Graham Hicks, freelance business journalist, former Edmonton Sun columnist, now speaks about the oil industry, with a focus on the Fort Mcmurray Oilsands.
