April 15, 2013

Ken Johnson kicked it off as president and spoke about Frank Hollman’s helium balloon departure- what a tribute to this amazing life. Thanks to all that came out. Seargent was Ray Dunham.

Happy/Sad Bucks

A few notes of Frank Hollman and happy bucks for his life and creative departure. There was plenty of celebration from Ken Johnson for his birthday, 26 years of marriage for Elaine, and Ray for a wedding anniversary.

Diane announced the “Spark a Memory” weekend hosted at Camp Alexo, May 17-21^st; sign up now. Only $25 for the weekend. RSVP by April 30^th. Need a certain amount of people for the weekend to run. Let’s show them our support. Phone 403-342-6500 for more details.

Ray announced the Special Olympics needing some volunteers for this weekend. Contact him directly to help out. They are looking for a driver on Saturday and Sunday. He ended up giving some tickets out to the Red Deer Royals show on April 28^th to Robert and Don for getting some Red Deer Royals trivia right.

Anni won the 50/50! Way to go Anni!

Dallas announced that Citizen of the Year is a bit below the target so let’s get behind it and show it some support. Still looking for silent auction items and community builders to step up.

Speakers

We heard from Nadine Ardent and Bre Fitzpatrick as our two vocational speakers. Both are original Red Deerians and are very grateful to be a part of the Rotary Club.

Nadine is a lawyer in Red Deer at Duhamel, Ming, Manning Law Firm. She has had an interesting career in her field living in Toronto and New York. She moved back to Red Deer to support her family with her Father’s health. Since returning she has become involved in the Red Deer Symphony Board, McMahon Addiction Recovery board and Rotary. What she loves about Rotary is the true elements of service above self. As she quoted;

“It’s easy to make a buck, but hard to make a difference.” Well said Nadine and thanks for sharing your story with us.

Bre is a Development Coordinator in Red Deer at the Multiple Sclerosis Society. She has a degree in Communications from her studies at the U of C. Her travels, though unexpected, brought her back to Red Deer to be closer ot a family support network after being diagnosed with MS in March 2010. Today she is keeping her mind active by taking a distance online Power Engineering course through Northern Lakes College. Life offers the unexpected and there are silver linings to everything it serves up.

Closing

Ken offered a huge thanks to Jamie and everyone that contributed to making this year’s Rebels 50/50 season a success. Well done and great season to the Rebels too.

Reminder that May 3-5 is the 5360 District Conference in Lethbridge.
