North Hill Inn, March 11, 2013

Visiting Guests: S. Lapalme, J. Wilson, E. Madson, S. Boil

Visiting Rotarians: Annie K., Jim MacSween

Happy & Sad Bucks: A brochure was on the table.  It’s from the city and asks for names to give to a park.

Blaine Dushanek: Returned from 19 days in Hawaii with 7 members of his family.

Ken Johnston: Told a Jim MacSween story about jingling for the Salvation Army outside Canadian Tire.  Someone slipped on the ice.  Jim went over to help.  When he came back he asked him what he did.  The answer was, I gave him my business card and told him to call me for legal advice.

Phil MacZuga: Announced sadly that his brother-in-law had had a stroke and passed away last Saturday.  His wife was handling the arrangements.

Gloria Beck: Was called by Jim Johnson of the Youth & Volunteer Centre at Camp Alexo.  The are planning a Rotary weekend May 17-21 for Rotarians and their families.  The cost is $25.  It’s a fundraiser.  She’s also participating in the Friday night dance off to fundraise for the Hospice.

Hillary Boisjolie:  Is creating the Citizen of the Year wine tree.  All donations are greatly accepted.  Ten percent off will be given by the Crossing Liquor Store.  Susan Boyle is in Red Deer for the summer.  She’s an RIYE alumnus to Italy.  She’s currently studying at UBC.  She offered to help connect the club with the Rotaracts.

Dean Williams: Was in Texas followed by a recovery weekend in Las Vegas.  Asked club members for silent auction items for the coming banquet.  The Citizen of the Year speaker is Terry Evanshen.

Jim McSween: Refuted all of Ken Johnston’s allegations.  Said he’s off to Hong Kong to visit a friend.

50/50: Drew Leroy Ehnes’ ticket but not the joker.

Club Business: Jack Panteluk announced the hockey tournament fundraiser (for suicide) isat 7:00 PM tonight at the arena.

Sergeant Wong: Asked if anyone missed the daylight saving (leap forward) hour change last night.  Apparently Blaine Newton did but he was still on time at the club’s meeting.  She said daylight saving was started in Germany in WWI to save energy, and repeated in WWII.  She also discovered that heart attack rates go up in the spring and down in the fall with the hour change.  Car accidents do the opposite.  Another problem is insomnia.  Daylight saving doesn’t occur in Africa or Asia or Saskatchewan to BC.

Program: It was a presentation of club committees and a request for members to sign up for committees that need additional members.  Dan Neilson/Ken Johnston orchestrated it.  There was also a reminder that the long-term strategy focuses on education and engagement.  The club has 101 members.  Phil MacZuga chairs the new Generations committee.  It particularly needs help.  Diane and Dick McDonell have agreed to host Annie for her last quarter.  The Rotary Foundation is a committee of one (Gerry WInia) which is targeting on raising $100 per member per year.  He also chairs the World Community Service committee which has received $10-20,000 from the club for worthwhile projects.  There is a $5,000 catalyst grant available from RI for someone who has a passionate project off shore.  The club’s social committee organizes Christmas and Valentine’s parties and would like some new blood to work with Gloria and Jim Slipp.  Annie summarized her last week.  She went snowboarding with Shelley and skiing in the mountains.  Her days skiing at Canyon are now over.

Next Meeting: Mac & Cheese for the Royals featuring Ron Chelio - NYC FD (June 5)
