Our Outback Adventure by Kerryn Dunlop Last month my husband Robert and I went on an outback adventure with my mother Corinne who is the Co-Ordinator of the Merimbula Uniting Church Op Shop at Tura Beach. Our mission was to get much needed supplies to our poorest Aboriginal communities. Brian and Ann Lamont who live just out of Bungendore make four trips a year to the outback. We decided to take a load out to Alice Springs with my 80 year old mother so she can see where her op-shop donations go and more importantly get an idea of how we can better help the cause and what items may be needed. Lamont’s packed our trailer for us. A little over 650 kilos. We went to Alice Springs, but instead of coming back the same way, we did a loop up through Mount Isa and down through Cobar to home. 6,500 klm over our 16.5 days. Mums’ job on our travels was to keep a running journal for our own records but also for future travellers who might like to take a load to the outback. We stayed in Alice 3 nights. Our first night we went to the house of Bryan McKain, Adviser in the Central Australian Region for the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet. One third of the trailer was left for him to get to parts of the Fink River Mission, a section run by a new couple down south of town. One 25kg box was going to a Gym Trainer – exercise clothing for women. Next morning, we went to the Yipirinya High School and met with Principal Chris Harvey and Sue the Liaison Officer. They got one third of the trailer which was children’s clothing plus 200 tennis balls. From there we headed out to Ntaria and the Fink River Mission of Hermannsburg and one third of the trailer went to the Ntaria Op-shop run by Marion Swift. They’ve been light on staff due to the Hermannsburg Choir travelling overseas.
