Peace Fellow receives Master's Degree

Below is a wonderful update from our Peace Fellow, James Petermeier.  The Rotary Club of North Minneapolis sponsored James's efforts to obtain his Masters.  As you will see from his update, the experience has been rewarding in that he is now seeking a position to help further peace in the world.
Greetings from your Rotary Peace Fellow (alumnus) James Petermeier,

Hello everybody in North Minneapolis. I just wanted to write, check in with you all and let you know how things are going here. As you can see from the pictures attached, I have completed my thesis requirements and have graduated from the two-year master's program at Uppsala University. And oh what a two years it has been! I met amazing people, traveled Europe, did incredible things. And it is all because you were all willing to sponsor me as a RPF. And for that I am incredibly grateful. The pictures attached are: 1. My class and I submitting our completed theses; 2. Me and my best friend throughout the RPF (José Alvarado - also a Peace Fellow); 3. My girlfriend and I at my class' graduation celebration dinner; and 4. A snapshot of my diploma.

As for the Master's program, my thesis went well; it was a challenge, but rewarding in the end. My final paper was about the media's power to influence governments who choose to target and kill its civilians. In the last semester, a paper I wrote earlier in the program was also published in the Pax et Bellum student journal at the Department of Peace and Conflict Research (at Uppsala University). If you are curious to read it, here is a link to the article (http://paxetbellum.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/Print-version-PAX-et-BELLUM-Journal-2017.pdf). It beings on page 30.

As for the future, I am a bit unsure as to where things are going to take me. My plan for now is that I am going to stay in Europe - specifically the Netherlands. My aim is to find work in The Hague in some form of victims' rights advocacy (applying what I have learned through my law degree and through the RPF). But right now I am applying for a residence visa so I cannot apply for work. While it is a change of scene and rhythm, I am taking a few weeks to relax and enjoy the Netherlands (and Germany). In my time here, I have also started trying my hand at photography, so that is keeping me busy. If you are curious to see some of my pictures, here is a link to my online portfolio (https://500px.com/jtpetermeier). I hope you enjoy.
I am also looking at the Rotary clubs throughout Rotterdam. Hopefully there are some in English. We shall see.

That is all for now. I hope all is well with everybody. I will keep in contact with you all. I will also be back in Minnesota for a short time in August/September. When I arrive, I will reach out to you an attend a club meeting or two! See you then.
