Rotary International is the world's first service club organization, with more than 1.2 million members in 33,000 clubs worldwide. Members ofthe Saamis Rotary Club in Medicine Hat represent a wide cross section of this community resulting in a wide variety of skills, interests, vocations and ideas.

  

 Since its inception, the Saamis Rotary Club has been active in this community and internationally.  

 

·          Funding of the new City Hall Saamis wall in 1983;

·          The ongoing development of the Saamis Rotary Park in South Ridge; 

·          E-Waste roundups which afforded the opportunity for citizens to recycle tonnes of old TVs,  computers and other electrical items;

·          Numerous scholarships at the Medicine Hat College;

·          Sponsorship of a number of minor league sporting teams;

·          Purchase of a number of electric beds for the Hospital;

·          Funding for an Alzheimer's Outreach Program;

·          Supporting the Salvation Army's Christmas Kettle Appeal;

·          Donations to the Canadian Red Cross for emergency relief locally and abroad including Haiti;

·          Purchase of shelter boxes for disaster zones;

·          Supported Rotary's international exchange student program as a means of expanding students' understanding of global issues;

·          Participation in the "Adventures in Citizenship" program whereby young people are afforded the opportunity to visit parliamentary institutions and other features of national significance.

 

Internationally, the Club has actively participated with Rotary International in the eradication of polio program, has collected and donated wheelchairs to Mexico, water filters and building expertise to the Dominican Republic and medical equipment to Sierra Leone.

 

Members of the Saamis Rotary Club are committed to the Rotary motto of "Service Above Self" and this is reflected in the variety of fundraising activities which support the Club's pursuit of a healthy, environmentally sensitive community with projects that can also assist these goals internationally where ever needs exist.

 

The Saamis Rotary Club meets each Thursday night at 6.15 at Paradise Valley Golf Course for dinner, informative programs and fellowship which assist the club in determining its priorities for donations whether it be for children, families, seniors, the environment or internationally.
