“MUNA (Model United Nations Assembly) is a Rotary project designed to create an awareness of the role of the United Nations in mediating international issues. The purpose of MUNA is to encourage young people to learn about other nations and appreciate the workings of the United Nations, while they develop their debating skills and gain self confidence in public speaking. Teams comprise 3 students from Years 11 & 12 – they select a country, research its history, politics, economics, people, international alignment and policies in current world affairs. They then debate selected resolutions from each country’s point of view in a simulated UN Assembly. This year a team from McAuley Catholic College under the mentorship of Alex Montford, were successful with their application and they have been given Germany as their country to research. As far as I am aware, this is the first time our club has had a school participate in MUNA. It will be held on Saturday 1st May at Tweed Heads Civic Centre from 9am and is open to family & Rotarians to attend.”
