Blast from the Past.

Club Meeting held at the School of Arts South Grafton a few years ago.

Hi everyone,

I hope you have all had a good week.

This week’s meeting was held on the deck of the Crown Hotel enabling members to order their own choice of food as Roches still does not have an operating kitchen. This was very relaxing watching the tranquillity of the mighty Clarence.

Prior to me arriving VP Lee & Mark B gave the members an overview of the very successful Australia Day event.

I am very honoured to have the club’s very first OAM member as part of our club. The meeting congratulated Des on his wonderful achievement with an OAM as acknowledgement of his achievements & commitments to the Grafton community over many years. Des has been involved in many organisations over a long number of years and continues the fight to get what is best for our community. Well done & deserved Des!

Last Saturday Leila, Don Cardow & Don Philbrook interviewed three very worthy candidates for the Frank Glasson Scholarship. After much deliberation the successful applicant was chosen;- Sarah Rigby-Pierse. Sarah will be along to our meeting on Wednesday for everyone to meet.

Leila gave also gave us all an update on the RYLA attendees being our Jaca Queen Hannah & Ella who will also be along this Wednesday attending our meeting.

Herman & Lee have been working behind the scenes developing a spreadsheet & some strategies for our projects area so that this area within our club remains focused & that we have the right balance for the club to manage projects..

We have also ordered the shelter to complete the combined Bridge project to stand over the top of the table & chairs on the riverbank. The structure is made of steel & aluminium as this is the preferred option that Council uses in it’s parks. This will complete the furniture & plans are under way to have an official opening.

This coming Thursday night will be our March board meeting. Unfortunately there hasn’t been the opportunity at our regular Wednesday meetings and with Australia Day to discuss the last Board meetings outcomes, however the minutes are available on the members area of Clubrunner if you would like to read through them for your information.

Whilst Roches still does not have a kitchen it makes it difficult for us to meet & have the ability to order meals. We will let you know before Wednesday for this week’s meeting arrangements.

Frank Glasson Scholarship

The Frank Glasson Scholarship committee has awarded the 2022 FGS to Sarah Rigby-Pierse.

Sarah is intending to train as a teacher at Charles Sturt University in Port Macquarie studying a Bachelor of Education (K-12).

Sarah has lived in the Clarence Valley since the age of two, and was involved in the Grafton Girl Guides during her Primary and early high school years,as well as play competitive soccer with the Grafton City Soccer Club and Grafton United. Being the only female on a team of male players.

Sarah attended Grafton High School from year seven during which time she was involved in the Student Representative Council, elected Prefect and participated in the Peer Support Program.

we look forward to hearing from Sarah on Wednesday.

FRANK GLASSON SCHOLARSHIP INCREASED

Following on from previous discussions, the executive have agreed in consensus to increase the FGS this year to $3,500 split into 2 equal payments of $1750 each.

As most of us are aware, the amount started at $3,000 and has been continuing at the same amount for quite a long while despite the cost of living rising over a long time.

DISTRICT EXPO IN LESS THAN 8 WEEKS

This year's event is going to be a real country affair, it's in Tenterfield! Go to the Expo Website https://rotary9640.org/page/district-conference and check out what's happening. There you find the program, a brief summary of all the Keynote Speakers, and of course, you can register. But of course, one of the big attractions of attending a conference is always the deep feeling of Rotary Fellowship. Being in the country, formalities will be kept to a minimum. Here is another introduction of a keynote speaker:

Alex Rubin – Thai Cave Rescue: In 2009, Alex was selected for specialised foreign linguistics training and spent a year learning the Thai language. Alex is now one of the highest qualified Thai linguists in Defence and uses these skills to enhance bilateral relations and international engagements. During 2018, Alex was deployed on short notice to the Thailand Cave Rescue mission, as the Australian military contingent commander and lead planner. For his work in this mission, Alex was awarded the Companion of the Order of Direkganabhorn and a royal acknowledgment by the King of Thailand.
