PRESIDENT'S RUMBLE

Happy New year GMR members,

Welcome to 2022!

I trust that you all had a wonderful & relaxing Xmas & New year spending some time with family & friends enjoying the festive season.

This year will bring another busy & exiting year for our club with a number of projects to continue along with a number of new projects. The 1^st project being our 2022 Australia Day event. The day will be called the “We’re All Part Of The Story” and is being held in Market Square from 1pm. The day has been made possible with a successful grant awarded to our club to run the event. A huge thank you to the small team of Lee, Mark B & Tony for being able to pull the grant together in such a short period of time. Over the next couple of weeks volunteers will be called for from club members to assist in organising the day for everyone to enjoy in the community for “free” as we all celebrate the occassion!

Whilst we had a very social small gathering on Wednesday last week, we are back to our normal meeting at Roche's this Wednesday in the Captains table room. Our roving GMR pub ambassadors of Bob & Don advised us on Wednesday that Roche's has been sold once again, yes sold in a short period of time! The new publican Ron Skinner is a very well known local businessman in the Valley & he looks forward to continuing our relationship at the pub. Unfortunately the kitchen is currently closed so therefore we have decided to order Domino's Pizza for our lunch on Wednesday. Given that we need to make sure we have the required amount of Pizza could you please let myself or Bob know if you are coming along on Wednesday please. This lunch will once again be “on the club” as the Pizzas will be paid for by the club.

To start the year we will have our January Board meeting this Thursday night from 5.30 pm at Roche's, so if the directors can let Greg or myself know if you are able to attend please.

Last week our very own President Elect Lee celebrated her 2022 birthday. On Friday she celebrated it in style with a small group of friends at the Indian Cottage Restaurant. Happy Birthday Lee!

Until Wednesday, stay safe & well & look forward to seeing as many as we can on Wednesday to welcome yet another exciting 2022 GMR year, & to share some fellowship and stories from the festive season.

LISTENING TO EACH OTHER’S STORIES – THE KEY TO AUSTRALIA DAY

More than 500 local community events and activities will be held around the country on

Australia Day 2022 with the support of the National Australia Day Council (NADC).

In the Clarence Valley, Grafton Midday Rotary will host a WE’RE ALL PART OF THE STORY

event in Market Square, Grafton and is encouraging community members to get together

to reflect, respect and celebrate on Australia Day 2022. Grafton Midday Rotary has

collaborated with Grafton Ngerrie Local Aboriginal Land Council and local Bundjalung,

Gumbaynggirr and Yagel nations people to share their history, stories and culture on the

day.

Grafton Midday Rotary President, Robert Blanchard would like to encourage all Clarence

Valley community members to come along and share the afternoon with family and

friends, listen to each other’s stories and experience Australia’s traditional First Nations

culture.

“The free event will run in Market Square on Wednesday 26 January from 1pm and all

community is welcome to enjoy an afternoon of cultural arts, crafts, games and music. The

event will also include a complimentary lunch of Australian favourites and samples of

traditional bush tucker. The stage will be alive with entertainment from local Aboriginal

bands, Maanyung & Mundaway and Ryan Martin Trio. It’s an event not to be missed.” Mr

Blanchard said.

NADC Chief Executive Karlie Brand said that on Australia Day we reflect on the past,

present and future, listen and respect each other’s stories, contributions and aspirations and

celebrate being Australian together, fair and free.

“This year, the NADC received a record number of grant applications from local

government authorities and community organisations to support local Australia Day events

and activities, including Grafton Midday Rotary.”

“We live on ancient Country, our history began more than 65,000 years ago. On Australia

Day, we reflect on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history and culture and how

European settlement forever changed how they lived their lives,” Ms Brand said

“We also celebrate the waves of migration that helped forge Australia’s place as one of

the world’s great multicultural successes.

“On Australia Day, we celebrate thousands of generations of enduring culture, learn more

about the Country we live on and listen to new perspectives on our history, and we

celebrate being part of a proud, ancient, multicultural nation that values the contribution

of each and every citizen.”

HUMOUR FOR THE WEEK

A mechanic once owned a dog named "Mace." Mace had a bad habit of eating all the grass in the mechanic's lawn, so the mechanic had to keep Mace inside. The grass eventually became overgrown.

One day the mechanic was working on a car in his backyard and dropped his wrench losing it in the tall grass. He couldn't find it for the life of him so he decided to call it a day.

That night, Mace escaped from the house and ate all the grass in the backyard. The next morning, the mechanic went outside and saw his wrench glinting in the sunlight.

Realising what had happened, he looked up to the heavens and proclaimed... "A grazing Mace, how sweet the hound that saved a wrench for me!"
