Last Meeting Miss Charlize Girdler enthusiastic spoke to the club members about her experience at the National Youth Science Forum. Charlize mention a lab experiment to extract DNA from strawberries, kiwi fruit and bananas with great success using a variety of household chemicals, including methylated spirits, dishwashing detergent, and a simple straining cloth. Participants learned about the cell's inner workings and its membrane and the various chemical processes required to extract the DNA. The day wasn't over yet! Participants jumped back onto zoom for the highly anticipated live-cross to CERN (The European Organization for Nuclear Research) in Switzerland. NYSF participants were able to view one of the world's largest and most respected centres for scientific research from 100m below the surface! and this was only day 2 of the three weeks. Well done Charlize. The National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) is a not-for-profit organisation that runs a number of residential programs to encourage young people in their passion for science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM). Our programs show the wide variety of engaging, rewarding and inspiring study and career options available in STEM fields. Our flagship program is the NYSF Year 12 Program, which runs in January each year for students about to enter year 12. Since 1984, more than 12,000 young Australians have progressed through the NYSF Year 12 Program (including those run under the organisation’s previous banner, the National Science Summer School (NSSS)). Rotary is the Founding Partner of NYSF and today the 20 local Rotary districts across Australia continue to conduct selections for the NYSF Year 12 Program on behalf of the NYSF.
