BOB'S BANTER
Contrary to previous notices there will be a meeting at Roches next week as usual, as well as a joint meeting at Maclean on Thursday.

It was pleasing to see past member Richard Green visiting the club together with our Jacaranda Queen candidate Zahli Stevens, and Martin Herring from
the Salvation Army.

Amanda will head a committee comprised of Judy Glasson, Judith Cardow and Sharni Wren to mentor both Miriam and Zahli in their respective Jacaranda
quests.

As reported at the meeting I am working on a submission for a government grant for defibrillators in the CBD. The closing date was 15/5/19 but has now
been extended to the 22/5. The application will be assessed by a committee but also by public opinion with the final outcome possibly in September.

Martin is looking for volunteers to doorknock at the upcoming appeal as well as drivers and collectors at shoppingworld and the mall. Martin can be
contacted on 0401 628 144.

What is Rotary

People of Action

Rotary is where neighbors, friends, and problem-solvers share ideas, join leaders, and take action to create lasting change.

WE CONNECT PEOPLE

Rotary unites more than a million people

Together, we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change – across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves.

WE TRANSFORM COMMUNITIES

We take action locally and globally

Each day, our members pour their passion, integrity, and intelligence into completing projects that have a lasting impact. We persevere until we deliver real, lasting solutions.

WE SOLVE PROBLEMS

No challenge is too big for us

For more than 110 years, we’ve bridged cultures and connected continents to champion peace, fight illiteracy and poverty, promote clean water and sanitation, and fight disease.

Birthing Kit Workshop

Birthing Kit Foundation - What We Do

Around 300,000 women and 3 million newborns die each year from preventable causes related to pregnancy and childbirth.  Most of these deaths occur in developing countries. To help address this, we provide an opportunity for Australian volunteers to fundraise for and engage in the assembly of Birthing Kits.

We partner with local organisations and health service providers that work in low-resource and emergency settings to improve maternal and newborn health outcomes. We donate Birthing Kits to approved organisations for distribution to pregnant women and maternal healthcare providers to help enable a safe and cleaner birthing environment. We also provide funding for collaborative and sustainable community development projects, supported by research and advocacy, for improved maternal and newborn outcomes.

Birthing Kits working bee at my place, 5 Rivertop Crescent, Junction Hill this Saturday, 25th May, from 2pm.

Just fantastic area but very dry as there was really no wet season this year Fitzroy Crossing only had 60m instead of 600. Have added a photo of Geikie Gorge.  Peter

Red Shield Appeal May 25 - 26

Thousands of volunteers will knock on doors all over Australia as part of The Salvation Army’s Red Shield Appeal doorknock this weekend.

Volunteers will also collect donations at major intersections, shopping centres and train stations.

The national fundraising target for the weekend is $9.5 million – part of an overall Red Shield Appeal target of $74 million.

All donations are immediately returned to the community through Salvation Army services and programs across Australia.

This year the Red Shield Appeal is focusing on homelessness and we’re asking the community to help end homelessness now through making a donation or collecting donations over this weekend.

Currently there are more than 105,000 people in Australia who don’t have a secure and safe place to live.

Each week The Salvation Army provides accommodation for around 2,000 people each week and support for thousands of people at extreme risk of becoming homeless.

The Salvos recently surveyed 2,406 of its emergency relief clients and found that housing affordability and homelessness is a significant issue for many people on a daily basis.

The survey reveals:

  • 13% of respondents had no stable accommodation
  • Respondents paid 59% of their income on accommodation expenses
  • Respondents had $125 per week to live on after accommodation expenses were paid ($17.86 per day)
  • Across all households, recipients of Newstart allowance had the least money to live on after accommodation expenses were paid
  • Respondents who were homeless experienced high levels of social exclusion (74%), poor social connectedness (46%) and poor social support (60%).

We know that the hardship of many homeless people is preventable with your help.

If you miss the Red Shield Appeal collectors this weekend you can still donate by:

Calling 13 SALVOS (13 72 58), clicking here to donate online, or donate in person at any Westpac Bank branch or by posting your cheque to PO Box 9888 in your capital city.

Please advise  Richard Nichols by a text message 0431 512 063 of all apologies & guests no later than 11am.  Charges apply.
