Lee's Chitchat
Our lives as we knew it has been turned upside down.  This Easter weekend will be a real tester in NSW and we have been warned to STAY AT HOME.  We are seeing results that are positive due to the majority of the population doing the right thing with the self isolation and social distancing. On a brighter note THANK YOU to those who sent over pictures to help get some good stories into the Bulletin.

The following guides from the NSW Government can assist:
Social distancing
What social distancing means and how it can reduce the risk of COVID-19 infection.

Social distancing can save lives and stop the spread
Anyone can spread COVID-19 or catch it. You may feel fit and healthy, but COVID-19 affects both young people and old people. If you have to leave home for essential reasons, stay at least 1.5 metres away from others.
Unless you are going to:
  • work (where you can’t work remotely)
  • school or an educational institution
  • shop for food and essentials
  • get medical care or supplies
  • exercise.
Regularly wash your hands for at least 20 seconds to protect yourself and others, and stop the virus spreading. Keep in touch with family and friends by phone, social media or video calls, where possible.

Slowing the spread of COVID-19 in NSW
NSW residents can help to reduce the risk of infection from COVID-19 (coronavirus) through social distancing.
Social distancing means we reduce close physical contact we have with one another.

When social distancing is combined with good personal hygiene, the spread of a pandemic through the community can be slowed. This helps protect the most vulnerable members of the community and reduces the impact of the pandemic on essential, life-saving health services. There are many actions individuals, employers and organisations can take now to promote social distancing and help reduce the risk of COVID-19 infection in our community.

Accent Hearing
Hi everyone, Accent Hearing is running by postal services currently so we don’t catch or pass anything on!

Because we have the Government Hearing Services contract for pensioners, their annual battery & maintenance fees should keep us afloat in paying Shoppingworld rent etc. Whiteman Creek grounds are beginning to look fantastic, spending more time outside building up chain saw muscles I never knew I had.

Kath’s music therapy work in virtually non-existent currently, but is still Secretary of the Music Therapy Association so always busy with that.

I’ve also had some music commissions come in I can chip away with at home for later in the year performances in the Sydney Town Hall (and not the Opera House because it is being renovated at present). This down time will also give me a chance to work on the business with a new website and 6 months of PowerPoint masterclass rehabilitation sessions, including initiating some other big music projects in Sydney. Lisa is videoconferencing all her psychology clients at Grafton & Coffs Harbour Headspace currently.

I hope all is well as can be with other members. Catch up ‘live’ soon I hope, otherwise see you online.
Cheers Greg, Kathy & Lisa B.
A background to Paul Harris Fellows
Rotary started with the vision of one man —  Paul Harris

Paul Harris gathered several business associates to discuss the idea of forming an organization for local professionals. He envisioned a place where professionals of diverse backgrounds could exchange ideas and form meaningful, lifelong friendships.

On 23 February 1905, Harris, Gustavus Loehr, Silvester Schiele, and Hiram Shorey gathered at Loehr’s office in Room 711 of the Unity Building in downtown Chicago. This was the first Rotary club meeting.  Rotary President (19161917) Arch Klumph’s idea for an endowment fund dedicated to “doing good in the world” planted the seed of The Rotary Foundation in 1917.  The first contribution to the Rotary Foundation was made in 1917 (US $26.50). In 1930, the Foundation awarded $500 to the International Society of Crippled Children.

The Paul Harris Fellow recognition acknowledges individuals who contribute, or who have contributions made in their name, of US$1,000 to The Rotary Foundation. Financial contributions to The Foundation can be channeled to the Annual Fund, PolioPlus Fund, or approved global grants.
The recognition of Paul Harris Fellows was established in 1957 to show appreciation for and encourage substantial contributions to what was then the Foundation’s only program, Rotary Foundation Fellowships for Advanced Study.   Rotarians have a tradition of honoring others and supporting the Foundation by awarding a Paul Harris Fellowship.

In Australia, Rotary clubs have used the Paul Harris Fellowship as a way of recognizing the contribution of individuals either to Rotary or to the community at large.  The ability of individual Rotary clubs to make the award of Paul Harris Fellows is dependent on the contributions made by the Club to the Rotary Foundation. Each donation of US$1000 parcel creates a “credit” for the club toward a Paul Harris Fellow. At this point, the Grafton Midday
Rotary Club has about 20 “credits” available (to be confirmed).  Each recipient of the Paul Harris Fellowship receives a certificate, a dress pin and a medallion.)  (The medallion is purchased separately by the club)  Existing individual Paul Harris Fellow may receive further recognition, either by a club or by individual donation of additional US$1000 “packages”. In those situations, Rotary International issues new pins in recognition. Six individual Paul Harris Fellows from Grafton Midday have made additional contributions of between two and six individual US$1000 “packages”.

In Grafton Midday, it has been the past practice to award Paul Harris Fellows at the annual Changeover Dinner. The Changeover Dinner is an occasion where the Paul Harris Fellows can be publicly acknowledged with the appropriate dignity.  Given most clubs award Paul Harris Fellowships at the club’s Changeover Dinner (typically at the end of June), there was always congestion at Rotary International to prepare the certificates, pins and medallion in time for those events.  Given the timeframe the Grafton Midday Rotary Club should send the nominations for Paul Harris Fellows to Rotary International by no later than the end of April. This is to ensure that the various paraphernalia is ready for distribution at the Changeover Dinner. Club members are
invited to submit their suggestions of recipients for this year’s Paul Harris Fellows (with some outline of the achievements of that individual) to the club President by the end of April.

Today’s Trivia
If the recognition donation was set at US1000 in 1957, what is the current value of US1000 in 1957 dollars compared to 2020 dollars. (Hint : Exchange rate changes are miniscule compared to increases in CPI or average weekly earnings).

JOKE CORNER
An old fellow was sitting at a petrol station restaurant quietly eating his dinner.
In walked three rough bikies, obviously wanting to cause trouble. One walked over and looked the older bloke up and down and stubbed out his cigarette in the man's dinner. Laughed and sat down at the counter.

The second bikie walker over to the old bloke and spat into his coffee and he laughed and went and sat next his mate and the counter.

The third bikie went up and tipped the old fellas dinner in his lap and laughed like crazy and went and sat next to his bikie mates at the counter.

The old bloke got up, paid his bill and walked out. The three bikies were laughing and letting everyone know what the thought of the old bloke saying how weak and gutless he was not standing up for himself and how he left without a word. The lady serving at the counter said…

" Yer and he wasn't much of a driver either, he just backed up his semi-trailer and flattened three motor cycles.!"
