International Peace Day
Sep. 20, 2018
Each year the International Day of Peace is observed around the world on September the 21st. The General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples. The United Nations Member States adopted the 17 Sustainable Development Goals in 2015 because they understood that it would not be possible to build a peaceful world if steps were not taken to achieve economic and social development for all people everywhere, and ensure that their rights were protected. The Sustainable Goals cover a broad range of issues, including poverty, hunger, health, education, climate change, gender equality, water, sanitation, energy, environment and social justice. Sustainable Development Goal 16 “Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions” calls for promoting peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, providing access to justice for all and building effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels. A peaceful society is one where there is justice and equality for everyone. Peace will enable a sustainable environment to take shape and a sustainable environment will help promote peace. The theme for the International Day of Peace in 2018 is “The Right to Peace - The Universal Declaration of Human Rights at 70” The theme celebrates the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. At our meeting on September 20th our club member John Lamming and a guest will talk about some of the work that he has done as a Rotary Peace Scholar in helping to bring Peace to communities in Canada and in other parts of the world. |

APU School Presentation
Oct. 04, 2018
Memory Mdyetseni: An orphan from a young age, Memory Mdyetseni struggled hard to complete her education.
However in 2006, Memory graduated from university with a degree in education, a lifelong dream she once thought to be unattainable. She is now the Director of APU Secondary School for Girls in rural Malawi. She is putting her considerable talents and passion into improving the lives of hundreds of other young girls who are suffering the same hardships that she overcame.
During the 2005 famine in Malawi, Memory undertook the daunting task of launching her own Famine Relief Effort in her home region of Kasungu. She and her husband Henry Mdyetseni, risked their lives to purchase, transport and distribute hundreds of bags of maize to thousands of the poorest villagers in Chamama, near Kasungu.
Through her work with girls and education, as well as through her Famine Relief Effort, Memory has become a respected role model in her community. She has single-handedly changed the views of the male leaders in her community. They are now encouraging their daughters to continue their schooling. Not only are they willingly accepting leadership from a woman, they are actively seeking Memory’s advice.
With the founding of Atsikana Pa Ulendo, Memory is now able to bring education to many of Malawi’s least fortunate. Because of Memory, hundreds of little girls now believe they have a future – a future that includes education, health, independence and empowerment.

Tip of the Spear: Our Species and Technology at a Crossroads
Nov. 29, 2018
Jim A. Gibson Our Species and Technology at a Crossroads Calgary-based entrepreneur Jim A. Gibson is an active leader in the Alberta innovation ecosystem. With 30 years of global experience at the forefront of technology and change, he is a passionate advocate for “paying attention” to what’s coming and providing concrete examples of how we can all be leaders and role models for change.
Jim’s talks take themes from his new book, Tip of the Spear, and challenge audiences to understand and respond to a new world that sees infinite possibilities meeting serious global problems head on.
Jim has an MBA from Schulich School of Business in Toronto, a B.Comm from the University of Toronto and holds his Certified Management Consulting Designation. He lives in Calgary, Canada with his family.
Tip of the Spear Passionate, experienced and an infinitely curious entrepreneur, Jim shares his cautionary tale of our species and technology at a crossroads. Tip of the Spear is the product of his life’s work at the forefront of technology and change.
"Our use of the technologies we have invented are now poised on a blade’s edge. Either the Tip of the Spear levels the playing field in the areas of Governance, Finance and Education, or we use these extraordinary technologies to create further concentrations of wealth and increased inequality. We have a choice: we can use our newly connected planet to have real conversations, or we let it devolve into a rabble at the gate."
