New Providence Primary student becomes published author

Ten-year-old New Providence Primary School student, Shannequa Jackson has been selected a winner of the 2019/2020 ‘Butterfly Storybook Project’ to become a published author.
The competition which is open to 10 countries across the Caribbean, is executed by the Rotary E- Club of the Caribbean in the 7020 club district and provides young emerging writers aged seven to 11 an opportunity to showcase their talents for story writing.
All stories are required to have a Caribbean flavour, can be written in the students’ local language and reflect acts of kindness, friendship, leadership, and/or respect.
In her story submission titled, “Lost and Found” Shannequa’s story follows a young girl who, while enjoying a day at the beach, stumbles across and helps a lost boy be relocated with his family.
During an official presentation at the recent weekly meeting of the Rotary Club of Liguanea Plains (RCLP) held at Eden Gardens Wellness and Spa in Kingston, a beaming Shannequa shared what winning the competition means to her.
“I am very happy that my story was selected. I feel encouraged to continue writing and sharing stories.”
Sydney Lowrie, President of the Rotary Club of Liguanea Plains, and who submitted Shannequa’s literary work to the competition, was elated at the development.
“We are so happy to see Shannequa be selected as one of the top writers in the region. New Providence Primary is the adopted school of our Club and this award is a solid indication that the literacy programmes being executed in the school are bearing fruit. ”
Shannequa’s story now becomes one of ten to be published in the 2019-20 edition of The Butterfly Story Book.
The book will be published in four languages (English, French, Spanish and Haitian Creole) and will be available for purchase worldwide on www.amazon.com.
The competition is open to young writers in Jamaica, Anguilla, British Virgin Islands and the Cayman Islands.
