This week's Sergeant-at-arms Bruce Yorga called the October 30th meeting to order. While there was no head table march in, Michael Pierson and Manon Mitchell did open the meeting with a tune commonly associated with Halloween: Gounod's Funeral March of a Marionette. Some members may remember this piece for its use as the theme music for the television anthology series Alfred Hitchcock Presents.

This week's invocation was delivered by our greeter Doug Webb.

Our thanks go out to our front entrance volunteers Larry Martin, Eric Bennett and Bill Gillott. President Tim also thanked Ralph Lundberg for contributing his photos over the years to the COG and the club archives by presenting him with glassware etched with his name.

This week's sing song was a great kickoff to Foundations month, as President Tim and Mark Starratt sang If I Had a Big Foundation to the tune of the Barenaked Ladies If I Had $1000000.

Our club secretary announced this week's visitors and guests, although a significant number of them were not signed in at the front entrance. It is important that all club members register their guests at the entrance so they may be introduced and acknowledged by the club. Four club members celebrated birthdays this week.

The nominating committee is pleased to put forward Eric Bennett as our President-Elect Nominee for the 2020-2021 Rotary year.

The nominations period is still open if any other club member wishes to stand for election.

Terry McMahon introduced our newest member Barbara Lutz. Welcome to Rotary, Barbara!

Celebrating the success of the inaugural UnGala, Manon Mitchell and her helpers announced the recipients of the funds raised at this spectacular event.

  • Christmas Hampers committee received $8,250
  • Major Donations received $17,000
  • World Community Service received $17,000

Additionally, the RESET received a cheque in the amount of $10,100 and a beautiful piece of art: Circles of Life, created by club member Walter Haessel's wife Ann Haessel.

Sid Mark, Foundations Committee Chair, introduced this week's speaker as kicking off November as Foundations month.

Past-president Eva Friesen's presentation launched our club's Foundations month with an informative presentation on The Power of Foundation Giving. Foundations are registered charities, and three types of foundations are recognized in Canada: private, public, and charitable organizations. Foundations are established to create lasting legacies, and are often created through wills.

Rotarians in Calgary can support two foundations: The Rotary Foundation (TRF) and the Calgary Rotary Clubs Foundation. The CRCF, established in 1972, currently enjoys the participation of twelve Rotary clubs located in the city. The CRCF is a funding foundation, not a granting organization, which manages funds on behalf of the twelve member clubs. Funds are distributed annually to Calgary's Rotary clubs in proportion to their share of the overall fund. The clubs are then tasked to donate these funds to worthy charitable organizations. Since inception, over $20 million has been reinvested through the Calgary Rotary Clubs.
