Al McMillan on the Rotary
Employment Partnership

This week's meeting opened with Manon Mitchell and Michael Pierson's musical nod to St. Patrick's Day, after which President Tim Heaton called the meeting to order and introduced his head table. Manon and Michael then led us in the singing of O Canada.

This week's invocation was delivered by our greeter Michael Pierson.

Thanks also go out to our front entrance volunteers John Seigner, Therese Takacs and Murray Young.

In lieu of thanking a COG sponsor, President Tim thanked the committees that meet in the Palliser in advance of our general club meeting.

While there were no visiting Rotarians this week, club secretary Kurt Kowalchuk welcomed our guests at this week's meeting. He also acknowledged the four club members celebrating birthdays this week.
There will be a memorial service to celebrate the life of Stan Sailor at the Silver Springs Golf Club on April 11th, beginning at 1:00 pm.
Ann Haessel is hosting Transitions, an exhibition of her art, in the Jubilee Auditorium's lower gallery from February 18th to March 27th, which includes a reception on Sunday, March 17th from 2:00 to 4:00 pm. Rotary's proceeds from the exhibition will go towards providing school supplies in rural Cambodia.
The club's Lake Louise Ski and Stroll Day will take place on March 23rd. Transportation to Lake Louise is only $30 per person, departing from the Calgary Golf & Country Club at 7:30 am.
Al McMillan provided an update on the Rotary Employment Partnership, a program that had its start in Edmonton in 2001 and was launched in Calgary by Michael Colborne in 2011. Since that time 67 positions have been created, and 25 people are currently employed through the partnership. An additional 40 people are seeking employment. REP is well supported by Rotary Clubs in Calgary and eleven clubs participate in its steering committee. Our club is well on the way to winning the Frank Devlyn award for creating the greatest number of REP jobs.
The club's annual Stampede Presidents Dinner will take place on Tuesday, March 26th, at the Calgary Golf & Country Club. Cocktail service begins at 6:00 pm, with dinner to follow at 6:30 pm.

Manon Mitchell announced the results of the Rotary Calgary Concerto Competition, which took place from March 8th to March 10th. Check out the winners at www.rotaryc3.com.

Our Speaker, Chris Pilger

Bob Holland Thanks
Our Speaker

Club member Dan Adams introduced our speaker Chris Pilger, Communications Director with CPA Alberta. Mr. Pilger's presentation on corporate social responsibility provided insights into the role of CPA Alberta in supporting its members as they work for the benefit of all Albertans.

CPA Alberta, the province's professional association of more than 28,500 chartered professional accountants, launched the CPA profession in 2015 by unifying three former accounting designations (Certified Professional Accountants, Certified General Accountants and Chartered Accountants). Since that time, CPA Alberta has developed a number of educational development and personal assistance programs for its members.

While corporate social responsibility means different things to different organizations, it has been shown that customers are far more likely to trust and to be loyal to companies that embrace some form of corporate responsibility. Additionally, job seekers are far more likely to consider employment with companies that place a strong emphasis on it.

The CPA Alberta board has developed a strategic plan that emphasizes protecting the public, developing an understanding of Alberta that ensures its members remain valued and essential to the province, dealing with disruption, achieving smart growth, and ensuring fiscal accountability.

The CPA Education Foundation promotes educational opportunities in accounting, encourages financial literacy, and promotes connections with Indigenous communities.

Following a lively question and answer session, Bob Holland thanked our speaker.
