This week's Sergeant-at-Arms David Bromwich called the meeting to order. President Tim Heaton introduced the head table, following which Michael Pierson led us in the singing of O Canada and greeter Jody Coenjarts delivered the invocation.

The meeting began with a brief Robbie Burns Day celebration with Tim Heaton delivering the Selkirk Grace. Stephanie McSween piped in the haggis, while visiting Rotarian Jim Hutchens from the Calgary South club delivered the Address to a Haggis and the toast.

As our speaker had another engagement to attend immediately following our meeting, the usual order of our proceedings was adjusted to accommodate her schedule, and Yegana Alasgarova introduced our speaker. At the conclusion of the speaker's presentation, the program continued with the remaining club business.

Thanks go out to our front entrance volunteers John Seigner, Barbara Lutz and Bruce Millar. Thanks also go out to Tim Heaton and Rideau Pharmacy for this week's COG sponsorship.

With club secretary Kurt Kowalchuk still in Cambodia, Carmen Goss welcomed our visiting Rotarians and guests, announced the four club members celebrating birthdays this week.

George Brookman provided a final report on the success of this year's Christmas Hampers program. We raised more than $52,000 to bring Christmas cheer to 108 families, which included 240 adults and 384 children. The club issued more than 100 tax receipts to our generous donors who made the hampers possible.

Former member Dan Pigeon, now a member of the Calgary West club, announced his club's Strawberry Shortcake and Gourmet Cookies fundraiser. The deadline for ordering these delicious treats is February 7th, and the Calgary West club will deliver your orders for free to locations within Calgary and Airdrie, provided your total order is $42 or more. All orders will be available on February 14th. Orders can be placed with Marie Rickard, or online at www.calgarywestrotaryclub.org/strawberryOrder.htm.

Please take note of the following.
  • Our February 5th club meeting is focused on attracting new members. We have special pricing for members bringing guests: $70 for you and your guest. Club member Tom Keenan, always an engaging speaker, will bring us up to date with events since the publication of his book. His presentation, Techno Creep: Five Years Later, promises to be full of information on current and emerging cyber threats.
  • The Rotary Club of Calgary South's Larry Kwong Memorial Chinese New Year dinner took place at the Regency Palace on January 25th.
  • Unfortunately, we have had to cancel our club's comedy evening at the Banff Centre due to insufficient interest.
  • Finally, District Governor hosted another of his film nights at the Globe Cinema. The film, Through the Cracks: Greg's Story, is a look at the life of Greg Price and his journey through the healthcare system that ended in his tragic and unexpected death.

Yegana Alasgarova
and Our Speaker

Yegana Alasgarova introduced Dr. Sandip Lalli, President and CEO of the Calgary Chamber. She opened her remarks by noting that the Calgary Chamber is an advocate for "the business of business", and noting the chamber and our club are rarities in having hundred year histories.

Dr. Lalli's presentation stressed that the business environment is becoming more complicated, with businesses being forced to navigate multi-layered government interventions in the marketplace. A moratorium on bitumen-carrying tankers on the north coast of British Columbia and Bill C-69, which is currently being reviewed by the Senate of Canada, are just two examples of the regulatory hurdles being imposed by governments. As a result, 2019 is shaping up to be a perfect year for Calgary businesses to implement creative solutions to the problems we are facing.

On January 24th, the Calgary Chamber released its non-partisan recommendations for political parties to consider in the upcoming provincial election campaign. Developed with input from business leaders, the chamber’s platform recommendations are based on five principles.
  • Create stability through fiscal responsibility.
  • Drive productivity through regulatory and tax reform.
  • Support growth through internal trade and access to markets.
  • Increase certainty through good governance and accountability.
  • Prepare for the future by developing and retaining a skilled workforce.
A lively discussion, including questions about municipal tax rates and runaway spending, plans to deal with the high vacancy rates in downtown office towers, and the ways the Calgary Chamber could assist businesses in embracing new technologies, followed Dr. Lalli's prepared remarks.

Doug Webb thanked this week's speaker.
