Vocational Service Month
Manon Mitchell
January is Rotary Vocational Service Month. During January, Rotarians are encouraged to focus on this important avenue of Rotary service.  Discussions on vocational service can lead to projects that not only develop the ethical consciousness and vocational skills of Rotarians but also the talents within their communities.  Vocational Service Month is an opportunity to begin year-long vocational service activities, ranging from Rotary discussions to awards to community projects.

Introducing Riz Nathoo

Riz's roots in Calgary extend back to a time when the city's population was less than half of its current size. He pursued his undergraduate studies at the University of Calgary and later earned his MBA from the University of Fredericton. Riz embarked on his career in the charitable sector at the Salvation Army and has since risen to the role of Vice President of Donor Engagement at Calgary Foundation.
 
Guided by values of integrity, connection, and compassion, Riz is committed to addressing intricate societal challenges and believes in the transformative power of collective experiences, continuous learning, embracing diversity, truth telling, and deep listening.
 
Nature holds a special place in Riz's life, serving as both a sanctuary and a source of joy. Whether exploring hiking trails and bike paths around the Rockies or immersing himself in a compelling book, he finds inspiration in the simplicity and beauty of these moments.

I’ve attached the Christmas letter from Lise Lyttke, a Rotary Exchange student our club hosted a few years ago and who stayed with me for a few months. It’s so great to read about her successes as evidence how special our exchange students are, and (for students and their parents contemplating doing the year) how it enhances one’s education and doesn’t diminish it in any way!

Partnering with NStep (Nutrition Students Teachers Exercising with Parents), the Rotary Club of Calgary West is selling quality flowers and vegetables grown just for you for pick up in May.

NStep focuses on children building healthy habits for life. 50% of every net dollar that we raise will go to NStep and 50% will be well spent on local and international projects vetted by our Calgary West Rotary Club.

 AVB Greenhouses grow all of the plants that are offered. This requires plenty of time so the planting begins as soon as the order deadline has closed.

We are unable to accept orders after Wednesday Jan 31, 2024. Pick up will be Wednesday May 22nd in the afternoon.

Calgary Reads, a prominent nonprofit dedicated to early childhood literacy for the past two decades, recently concluded its operations and transitioned its programs, knowledge, and legacy components to seven other organizations through the 'Dandelion Strategy.' The organization officially ceased operations in early 2023 and voluntarily revoked its charitable status in the summer of the same year. The Dandelion Strategy aims not only to sustain the impact in the community beyond Calgary Reads' existence but also to amplify that impact, allowing each transferred program to flourish independently. This unconventional approach involves winding down the organization while paradoxically increasing its overall influence.
