CRCF 2024 Impact Report
Rob Brookwell (Chair, CRCF)
I am pleased to present our first edition of the CRCF Impact Report. You can view the document by clicking this link. This document has taken some time to assemble as we attempted to educate all participating clubs on the intent of the report and the content we were seeking. This first edition has the basic parameters of what we are intending, but unfortunately, we were not able to obtain sufficient project details to include additional stories in this report. We are hoping that this release will spark some additional content contributions for next year. The Communications Committee will now be turning our attention toward a short update presentation that will be provided to all lead directors for use in the lead-up to Foundations month in November.
Please feel free to contact myself, Mike Ruttan, or Alana Sargent with any questions or suggestions you may have and thank you for ensuring all Calgary members continue to be informed about the CRCF.
You can see the report by scanning this QR code as well.
Talking and Investing in Early Literacy
Natalie Appleton/Steacy Pinney
We’re excited to announce the first list of 2024 Calgary Reads Big Book Sale proceed recipients—and we’re also excited to share how we’re helping members to tell others about this important work.
You've read over the last months about our service projects at "Marmie's House", Youth Centres of Calgary newest facility in Forest Lawn across the street from some of the school in our "Stay In School" program. Our club supported the purchase of this house through the bequest from Marmie Hess to direct her donation to supporting youth in our community.
Well, the house will be opening with the new school year and we'll be participating in the opening celebrations on September 12th (4:00 - 6:00 pm). You'll have to register to attend as there is limited capacity of 150; in addition we will be serving our signature bar--b-q culinary delights! Click here to register and grab your free ticket today.
Welcome Elia Bombardelli
Manon Mitchell
Kurt and I will be hosting Rotarians young and not so young this year. Our first addition to our family will be Elia Bombardelli (age 27) from Italy. Elia is aNew Generations Service Exchangeyouth. He will be here from October 5 to mid November participating in a number of Rotary events (like coming to our lunch and participating in a service project). Part of his commitment to this exchange is giving a presentation, so watch for information and the great opportunity to meet Elia in an informal setting. If you'd like to invite Elia to your business or event, or service project, please let me know so that we can add these wonderful cultural and vocational activities to his calendar.
NGSE is a short term, customizable program for post-secondary students and professionals ages 18 - 30. Stay tuned for more information about the awesome people who will be visiting and staying with us this year!

Re-imagining the Tom Jackson Indigenous Stay in School Program
Franco Savoia
The Club has been operating the Tom Jackson Indigenous Stay in School Program for more than 10 years. Given the challenges of recruiting Indigenous mentors and the many developments in Calgary’s Indigenous communities, the Club’s Indigenous Relations and Youth Services Committees engaged the Urban Society for Aboriginal Youth (USAY) to assist in reviewing the program and seeking new approaches that are Indigenous led to support Indigenous youth. USAY and Rotary engaged Monique Fry, an Indigenous Community Advocate to lead and facilitate the process. The process included a survey of Indigenous youth, mentors and some interviews.
The results were shared in a workshop held on August 12th at the Enmax Park at the Stampede. Fifteen participants, including 5 Rotarians (Steve Allan, Cam Stewart, Alana Sargent, Randy Topolnitsky and Franco Savoia) met for 5 hours. Two Indigenous Elders and several other community stakeholders reviewed the input and 3 possible options or scenarios for going forward.
Monique Fry will draft a report for our committees’ consideration. In addition, the Rotarians present will debrief the results and recommend actions for going forward. We are thankful to the Calgary Stampede who provided the venue, lunch and refreshments for the workshop.
September Bar-B-Qs
Diane Macdonald
Unfortunately, the Bar-B-Q that was planned in June for the Father Lacombe Seniors facility had to be cancelled due to an outbreak of Covid/RSV. We’ll let you know when it is re-scheduled. We do have some Bar-B-Qs coming up in September, though.
September 12
Marmie’s House will be having their opening and have asked for a Bar-B-Q as part of the celebration.
