Only 44 people attended this week's meeting in the Alberta room, which is regrettable as our speaker Dr. Jim Powell's presentation on the efforts to assist people in Ecuador with hip dysplasia was inspiring. Sergeant-at-arms Tom Tait called the meeting to order, while President Rick Erven introduced the head table. Michael Pierson provided the piano accompaniment to our singing of O Canada, and Franco Savoia delivered a cowboy/cowgirl inspired invocation. President Tim thanked our entrance volunteers Barbara Lutz, Bev Blair, Murray Young and greeter Keith Visser. Club secretary Jennifer Lavier Jankovic welcomed our visitors and guests and announced the club members celebrating birthdays this week and last week. New for this year, President Rick is adding a "Rotarians in the News" announcement to the weekly agenda. This past week Premier Jason Kenney appointed club member Steve Allan to lead a $2.5 million inquiry into the role of foreign funded environmental campaigns targeting the province's energy sector. Delivering on a key election campaign pledge, this inquiry builds on the efforts of Vancouver-based researcher Vivian Krause who spoke to our club on April 9th. Club member Kimberley Van Vliet is expanding the ConvergX conference in partnership with the Farnborough Air Show. ConvergX brings together key players in the energy and defence sectors to discuss potential synergies and investment opportunities. President Rick announced the passing of former club member Rick Smith. He also provided a brief recap of the club's annual Sneak-a-Peek fellowship event. The Sneak-a-Peek photo album has been posted on the club website. We are still looking for team members for the United Way's upcoming 2019 Plane Pull. |
