With a Challenge for Our Club

Our sergeant-at-arms Lorne Larson called our fifth meeting of the Rotary year to order. Club president Rick Erven introduced the head table, and Michael Pierson led us in singing O Canada. Our greeter Trevor Axworthy delivered the invocation.

President Rick thanked our meeting volunteers Barbara Lutz, Colin Furness and Bob Junker.

Kurt Kowalchuk welcomed our guests, which included a welcome return visit by Frank McKitrick, and acknowledged the three club members celebrating birthdays this week.

Kurt also provided some interesting information for this week's "did you know" segment. The first Rotary club, founded in Chicago in 1905, took its name from the practice of "rotating" its meetings among the offices of their members. The first Canadian Rotary club was founded in Winnipeg in 1912, and the Rotary Club of Calgary was founded in 1914. While the International Association of Rotary clubs (Rotary International) was founded in 1922, the Rotary Foundation was founded in 1917. Our club participated in its first international project that year when club members went door to door collecting boots to send to troops serving in the Belgian Army. With limited opportunities to replace their footwear, soldiers suffered badly from trench foot and other injuries arising from immersion foot syndromes.

Catherine Brownlee announced the extension of the nomination period for the 7 Over 70 Awards has been extended to August 23rd.

We are still looking for team members for the United Way's upcoming 2019 Plane Pull.

Lui Greco from the Rotary Club of Calgary Olympic challenged us to Walk a Mile in her Shoes on September 15th to raise funds and step up against the cycle of violence against women in our city.

Manon Mitchell and David Bromwich urged us to purchase tickets for the wine tree raffle. Tickets are $100 each, and only 50 tickets will be sold.

In her role as Grants Director, Manon also provided an overview of the Grants portfolio, which serves the club by identifying sources of funding for club projects and supporting applications for District Designated Funds (DDF) from the District Grants Subcommittee.

A blockchain is a list of linked records with the key characteristic that every new record added to a chain contains coded information about records already in the chain, thereby making it very difficult to alter any of the records. David Holden introduced Dan Giurescu, founder of TerraHub who described how businesses are beginning to use blockchain technology. Mr. Giurescu created TerraHub after attempting to develop a blockchain product offering and struggling to find accurate information. He saw the need for a company to help cut through the myths and provide real world advice and guidance to companies looking to implement blockchain solutions.

Mr. Giurescu told us that we are on the brink of a fourth industrial revolution that is blurring the lines between physical, digital and biological spheres through the fusion of several rapidly evolving technologies. Echoing Jim Gibson's April 9th presentation to the club, he told us how advances in artificial technology, robotics and robotic aircraft, fifth generation cellular networks, the internet of things, block chain technologies, 3D printing, and quantum computing are combining to drive exponential change.

TerraHub is developing its CoLab to foster the development of cross-technology products by local companies, the growth of ideas into compelling prototypes, and education to seed the development of research, ideas and talent.

He also described how these technologies are changing the oil and gas sector. The term Oil & Gas 4.0 has emerged to describe how digitization, big data, automation, robotic aviation and the internet of things are creating lucrative opportunities for evolution and change. Surface rights management and maintenance records are just two of the many block chain applications being implemented by Calgary-based oil and gas companies. Following a lively question and answer session, Randy Topolnitsky thanked our speaker.
