David Leslie introduced Michael Brown, President of the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation.

Mr. Brown provided a comprehensive update on the plan to redevelop the lands of east Victoria Park into Calgary's new culture and entertainment district. He explained how the plan will result in four million square feet of development space, and more than 8,000 new residents moving into the district. The underlying goal of the plan is to enhance the existing community, which includes a number of heritage buildings, Stampede Park and the Elbow River. The ideal outcome of the plan will be an accessible community with enhanced connections to adjacent neighbourhoods.

He also explained how the vision of the master plan will be achieved through a number of enabling infrastructure projects.
  • Finalization of the Rivers District Master Plan that will guide the overall development of the area.
  • Extension of 17th Avenue into Stampede Park will restore the connections that were severed when the LRT was built.
  • Replacing the 9th Avenue SE bridge will connect Inglewood to the Rivers District.
  • Building a new 5th Street SE underpass will further connect the Rivers District to its surrounding community.
  • Developing Stampede Trail as a "festival street" will create a vehicle and pedestrian link that, when taken with the 17th Avenue extension, will create an attractive corridor for retail and commercial development.
  • Supporting community building projects (BMO Centre expansion and a new Events Centre) will serve as a catalyst for redevelopment.
  • Completing Stage 2 of the Riverwalk will reconnect east Victoria Park with the Elbow River.

Lisa Corrigan thanked our speaker for his information packed presentation.
