Time to Make Your Donation
Time to Make Your Donation
By Manon Mitchell, President

It's that time of the year when we call on ALL ROTARIANS to support our two foundations: The Rotary Foundation and the Calgary Rotary Clubs Foundation.

This year's campaign "ANY AMOUNT COUNTS" underscores the importance of making a donation no matter what the amount of the donation.

Simply go to our club's website and click the DONATE button. Once on the donate page you'll be able to choose where to channel your donation.
Only 40% of club members currently donate. TOGETHER we can change that number.

Not a Paul Harris member yet? Many of the club members have Paul Harris points to donate AND our club's policy is to match points up to 500 (1 point = $1 USD contribution).

It's time to rise to the challenge and join the growing ranks of Paul Harris Fellows in our club.

Contact Brom to get matching points from members. Contact Jo-Ann to get matching points from club.

Here are links to show you how to make your donations:

Visiting with Walter Haessel

By Garth Toombs

Ann and Garth Toombs dropped into see Walter Haessel at his now home at Chinook Care Centre on Sunday Nov 14, 2021.

We are happy to report that Walter loves to have visitors and likes to talk about Rotary. We have enjoyed our visits with him and he wanted us to pass on to the club that he is at Chinook Care Centre located at 1261 Glenmore Trail SW in case other members want to visit. Walter has some interesting Rotary memorabilia to show all.

We have been told by Ann, his wife, that he loves to receive letters and mail from Rotarians. If you wish to write to Walter you can do so by emailing Ann at ann@haessel.net and she will copy and deliver it to him.

Ann and Garth Toombs are pictured below with Walter Haessel on November 14, 2021.

The Rotary Foundation - What is that?

By David Bromwich

Often referred to as the TRF and as the "intelligent heart of Rotary", this public charitable foundation was created in 1917 as a non-profit corporation administered out of Evanston( Chicago), Illinois.  It has a board of 14 trustees made up of Rotary members from across the globe.  It supports the efforts of Rotary International (RI) to achieve world understanding and peace by improving health, providing quality education, improving the environment and alleviating poverty.  It is supported solely by voluntary contributions.  The trustees control a block of investments currently exceeding $1 billion from which periodic payments are made in the form of grants.  Our Rotary District 5360 receives an annual grant and, in turn, makes smaller grants to clubs in our District, some of which (Global Grants) are matched by further funds from RI.

The Calgary Rotary Clubs Foundation -- What is That?

Often referred to as CRCF, this charitable community foundation currently has assets exceeding $58 million of which about 83% relates to our Club.  Each year the directors (some of whom are our Club members) authorize a distribution to our Club.  In June, 2021, CRCF handed our Club a cheque for just over $2 million.  This came from the managed investments which CRCF has as a result of donations to it by past and present members.  In accordance with the wishes of the late Ev and Ellen Mayhood, half of the return from money they gave to CRCF flows to our Club and the other half is sent by our Club to The Rotary Foundation.  The balance, which currently exceeds $1.1 million each year,  funds the philanthropic projects which our Club members and leaders review and approve to support both local and global needs.
