Hi My Rotary Friends,

Wow! What a fabulous week it has been! Our Poppies On Parade project is flourishing! They look sensational, and we have already received such positive feedback from our community. We are looking forward to seeing as many members as possible to be at the Murwillumbah Civic centre at 9am Anzac Day, to help with setting up the chairs for the service, and then helping pack them away afterwards – please remember to wear your Club shirts also. Such a wonderful opportunity for our Club to be of Service to our local community.

Breaking News – ABC North Coast Radio have done a live interview with Kaileen Casey on Saturday morning about our Poppies…. and an article has also been written – links have been included below so you can check them out. We also achieved front page of The Weekly - very exciting to have this media spotlight on our project!

Our guest speaker last Wednesday was Rachel Halloran, and what a truly amazing presentation this was. So humbling and inspiring to hear stories of what Rachel has done, and what organisations such as MSF do for our world. It also puts into perspective how blessed we are to live in such a peaceful and protected country, with vaccinations so easy to access, and health care of such a high standard.

Massive congratulations Cam Weeks who was awarded this month’s Fellowship Award! As a new member, Cam has been amazing in the way he has volunteered and been involved in everything, even sewing Poppies! Thank you for being such a wonderful Rotarian Cam – a very well deserved award.

Bring and Buy was a great success, with $138 (or more) raised, along with $304 raised from our Easter Raffle – with all funds going to Rotary Foundation – thank you everyone.

This coming Wednesday we are looking forward to our guest speaker who is our very own Cathy Akehurst, who will be speaking about George’s Boxes, a project that Cathy initiated a number of years ago.

DG Jeff, Kaileen and myself all attended the Membership Summit on Saturday, along with other Rotarians who came in from Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra…. and of course Jason Browne, who travelled from the United States to present to us. What an incredible day it was, and we are feeling motivated and energised for all things membership. Many thanks to District 9640 for hosting this Summit, and I loved meeting so many other amazing Rotarians too.

Looking forward to seeing you all on Wednesday,
Yours in Rotary,
Jeannie

Jeannie acknowledged the Traditional Owners past and present. Words of Wisdom were read by Desiree (Object of Rotary).
Bring and Buy was on today with some fantastic cooking. Mary gave a Covid-19 update stating that Covid was still around.
The Theme for April is Maternal and Child Health. Kaileen started the Icebreaker with: Your first memory as a child. We heard some beautiful funny stories.
Kaileen advised that Helen Albury is organising a morning tea Fundraiser on 30th April for Days for Girls. It will be held from 9:30am to 11 am at the Jessie McMillan Hall. Cost will be $10.
Reports
Simone gave a flood update. Jeff and Simone went to the Hub to do needs assessments. They rang members of the community who were flood affected and asked them what their needs were. Some people needed major work done and many people just needed a talk. Jeannie, David and Wayne were going to the Hub today. More people are required to help with need assessments. So far 500 people have been contacted. The flood was 7 weeks ago.
Sophia : Trivia Night 30/4 and currently need extra prizes for raffles.
Ann: Foundation raised $304 in Easter Raffle.
Ann is selling Anzac Day poppies $2. Defibrillator Shop sent a thank you letter to Ann.
Helen: Mother’s Day more chocolates are needed.
Mary: Birthing Kits, see Mary if you can cut up sheets and towels.
Peter has contacted musician Phil Eisenberg re: Community Event Flood Aftermath. Peter has also spoken to Kerrie McConnell (Events Officer) from Tweed Shire Council regarding using the Main Street as the venue. Council sees the need for this event and may show leniency towards allowing the event to be in the Main Street. Council is hoping to tap into a grant and Kerrie asked us to wait for 3 weeks.
Kaileen introduced our Guest Speaker Rachel Halloran who worked for Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) for over 9 years. MSF is 100% privately funded which means they can react promptly.
MSF’s work in Tanzania in 2015. MSF provided assistance to refugees from Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) living in overcrowded camps in Tanzania, with poor sanitation. The unhygienic conditions meant that people were at risk of diseases such as cholera, malaria, respiratory tract infections and diarrhoea. In 2015 there were almost 200,000 refugees in Tanzania with the majority from the DRC and Burundi.
MSF set up a cholera treatment centre in a football stadium. Rachel was the Emergency Coordinator for the administration of the cholera vaccine.
Nyarugusu Refugee Camp: Work commenced in May 2015 and Cholera Treatment Centre was set up. By June due to unrest in Burundi there were more refugees arriving up to 1,000 a day at one stage. The target was to treat people over one year old. The vaccine given was shanchol cholera oral vaccine given 2 doses 3 weeks apart. As the vaccine was bitter a butterscotch candy was handed out so people would come back for their second dose. There were 20 vaccination sites set up. The campaign was successfully completed in July. Mary thanked Rachel.

Membership Summit 23/4 will be at Rydge’s Gold Coast Airport Hotel and has Jason Browne performing in person. Jason is flying in from Pennsylvania to speak about membership, leadership and creative change.
Fellowship Award was given by Cathy to Cam. Cam is a fantastic member of our Club who lends a hand with everything.
Happy Birthday to Brigitte for this Saturday!
Marissa and Peter have contacted BlazeAid as they need help to fix fencing on their property.
BlazeAid have been based in Casino for the past 18 months and have been serving Lismore, Kyogle and Casino due to the previous fires. Blaze Aid can help with fencing, painting as well and can stay as long as needed. Blaze Aid have requested help from Service Clubs to help feed volunteers.
