MSF’s work in Tanzania in 2015. MSF provided assistance to refugees from Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) living in overcrowded camps in Tanzania, with poor sanitation. The unhygienic conditions meant that people were at risk of diseases such as cholera, malaria, respiratory tract infections and diarrhoea. In 2015 there were almost 200,000 refugees in Tanzania with the majority from the DRC and Burundi.
MSF set up a cholera treatment centre in a football stadium. Rachel was the Emergency Coordinator for the administration of the cholera vaccine.
Nyarugusu Refugee Camp: Work commenced in May 2015 and Cholera Treatment Centre was set up. By June due to unrest in Burundi there were more refugees arriving up to 1,000 a day at one stage. The target was to treat people over one year old. The vaccine given was shanchol cholera oral vaccine given 2 doses 3 weeks apart. As the vaccine was bitter a butterscotch candy was handed out so people would come back for their second dose. There were 20 vaccination sites set up. The campaign was successfully completed in July. Mary thanked Rachel.
