Peace and conflict month started off well with lots of colourful outfits. This week we will be hearing from a surprise guest speaker, coming to you all the way from Iceland!

The planning for April 17 – 100 years of Rotary in Australia Baton Relay is underway. We will have the baton for this day which will coincide with our next book fair. T Shirts promoting 100 years in Rotary and Rotary Says NO to Domestic Violence are available – I have sent this to you all in a separate email.

Our District Governor Elect Jeff Egan advised that the Rotary theme for his year will be “Serve to Change Lives”

Thank you to those of you who returned my email to pass on to Adam and Kasey from Johnny Franco’s asking for feedback for breakfast.

Do you know if your buddy is receiving the newsletter? Please ask around, if someone is not receiving it please get them to check their junk folder.

From Jeannie our awesome Services Director, we will have another packing night for You Have A Friend. No official date yet, but it will be towards the end of March. The items most sought at the moment are toothpaste and toothbrushes, the most economical place to get these from is the Reject Shop.

Also from Jeannie a virtual online event being run by Solar Buddy - on March 4th 2021 – International Womens Day, details below:

Celebrate International Women's Day with us!

"We cannot succeed when half of us are held back." - Malala Yousafzai
Did you know that worldwide there are 5.5 million more girls than boys not attending school?
We believe girls and women everywhere, especially those living in extreme energy poverty, deserve equal rights.
That’s why we’re celebrating this International Women's Day with our virtual One Light Only festival.

One Light Only
is SolarBuddy's inaugural virtual event boasting a range of prominent Australian artists and performers, who are banding together to create a brighter future for women and girls across the world.
Australia's best Impersonator, Comedian and One Light Only Emcee, Ben Price, will be joined by a prominent ARIA winner, former INXS member, and one of Australia's favourite duos to bring you an afternoon of entertainment with a difference.
SolarBuddy choose to challenge gender inequalities that play a part in the health and education gap around the world.
We’re aiming to raise $50,000 to enable girls and women without access to electricity in Madagascar to enjoy equal rights, health and education through our life-changing solar lights.
If like us, you missed music events in 2020, this is your chance to enjoy music, art and magic while supporting International Women's Day!
Your ticket purchase will make a real difference to women and girls worldwide, for this generation and those to come.
Join this global celebration and secure your tickets now!

A camping weekend to Reflections Evans Heads is well and truly going ahead. The weekend is 13th/14th of March – however feel free to be there for as little or as much time as you want. When you ring to make a booking be sure to mention you are part of the club so they can group us as close together as possible.

The camping event is getting some good numbers and looks like being a lot of fun. I have been in contact with the newly chartered Evans Head Rotary Club and hopefully we can have a catch up with them.

Please don’t forget to put your breakfast order in and also please remember to start your direct payments for breakfast to the general account again.

See you Wednesday morning.

Cheers,
Hayley

ROTARY PEACE CENTERS

Creating peace in the world.

An ambitious goal, put into action by Rotary.

The spike in regional and local conflicts around the world has underscored the need for professionals skilled in creating peace.

Rotary created the Rotary Peace Centers in 2002 to identify and train highly qualified professionals to become agents of peace.

Six Rotary Peace Centers at seven prestigious universities throughout the world offer Rotary Peace Fellows a rigorous program of study and applied field experience in areas relating to peace and conflict resolution.

The Rotary Peace Centers draw from Rotary’s long, unwavering commitment to peace, seen in projects that address the root causes of conflict.

Rotary’s 70-year collaboration with the United Nations and Rotary’s peace symposiums and peace forums throughout the world further the cause of peace.

Rotary Peace Fellows are committed to the advancement of peace, serving as leaders in a range of international, national, and local organizations.

They promote national and international cooperation, peace, and the successful resolution of conflict in their lives, in their careers, and through their service activities.

The Rotary Peace Centers program is made possible through the generous support of a relatively small group of Rotarians and friends of Rotary whose major gifts and commitments will help endow the program

Rotary creates environments where peace can happen.

ROTARY PEACE CENTERS

Rotary Peace Fellows study at Rotary Peace Centers located in countries other than their own.

Through a rigorous program of academic study and practical training, the Rotary Peace Centers develop leaders who become catalysts for peace and conflict resolution in their communities and around the globe.

The program relies on Rotarians to help identify potential candidates, with a goal of selecting approximately 50 master’s degree fellows and 50 professional development certificate fellows each year.

The Rotary Peace Centers operate in partnership with seven premier institutions of higher learning.

These institutions have changed as the program has evolved.

University of Bradford, West Yorkshire, England
The Department of Peace Studies at the University of Bradford is the largest in the world and offers several master’s degrees. The department staff edits three academic publications — International Peacekeeping, Journal of Latin American Studies, and Central and European Review — and its research students produce the online journal Peace, Conflict, and Development.

Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand
Chulalongkorn University offers an intensive, three-month period of study that leads to a professional development certificate. Unlike the other Rotary Peace Center partner schools, where the average age is about 30, fellows at Chulalongkorn are closer to 40 years old and already working in related fields.

Duke University and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA
These universities, located just 10 miles apart, jointly host the Duke-UNC Rotary Peace Center. Rotary Peace Fellows have the opportunity to earn both a master’s degree in International Development Policy from Duke and a graduate certificate in International Peace and Conflict Resolution from UNC.

International Christian University, Tokyo, Japan International Christian University has been pioneer in liberal arts education in Japan since opening its doors in 1953. Its Department of Public Policy and Social Research offers master’s degrees in social sciences, humanities, natural sciences, and interdisciplinary studies as well as newly emerging fields of study.

University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia
The School of Political Science and International Studies at the University of Queensland is ranked among the top 30 schools in the world in its field. Rotary Peace Fellows earn a master’s degree in International Studies and Peace and Conflict Resolution.

Uppsala University, Uppsala, Sweden
The Department of Peace and Conflict Research at Uppsala offers a master’s degree in Social Science. The department conducts research in several major areas of peace and conflict studies and is internationally renowned for its free and globally accessible data collection program related to conflict.

DID YOU KNOW?
LOOPER NOTES

Looper Notes 3rd February, 2021

Most members dressed in the ‘hippy era’ for this month’s theme of Peace and Conflict Resolution.
Hayley’s bad joke!
What do you call a hippies’ wife?
Mrs Hippie (Mississippi)

Jeff advised that the Rotary Theme for 2021-22 is Serve to Change Lives.
Simone showed a video explaining Rotary Peace Fellows. The video showed Rotary Peace Fellows in action. Rotarians from all over the world explained what they do. The Rotary Peace Fellows advocate for social change. People from all over the world interpret ‘peace’ in different ways.

The second video was about the Peace Institute for Economics and Peace. They monitor Global Index of Peace with the aim to discover the underlying causes of conflict. True peace comes with educating people.

The question was posed to us to brainstorm in our groups What we can do in our community?
Suggestions included;
Start in schools and teach respect.
Rotary’s projects such as Solar Buddies
Smile at a stranger
Promote acceptance of other cultures
Youth Projects such as RYLA are so important
Promote our club so people know
We must lead by example
Help homeless people
Open up communications
Be inclusive with our projects
5-12 Early Act promoted in our schools

Our RYLA candidate Emily thoroughly enjoyed her experience at RYLA. Emily said that the experience was life changing and that she had gained 35 friends. Emily said that soon she would show us a presentation of her RYLA experience.

Jeannie in her Service’s Report said she would have another packing day for You Have A Friend in March. Club members were asked to bring in toothbrushes, toothpaste and deodorant. Also bring in crotchet poppies for decorating the bridge on ANZAC Day. Marissa’s Mum has made 250 poppies.
Judy is organising with Brendan (Principal of Condong School) the Solar Buddies Project. Two other small schools in our area will be included. Hopefully this will commence in Term One.

Susan spoke about Rotary says No to Domestic Violence. Purple T shirts are available with the slogan printed on them. Please tell Hayley if you would like to order a T shirt $20. Our Club will hold another Book Fair on 17th April. Members helping in the Book Fair will wear the purple shirts and a baton relay will be held around the town block promoting Rotary Days No to Domestic Violence. Businesses in the town will also be asked to promote and decorate their shopfronts promoting Rotary says No to Domestic Violence. There was also a proposal to approach the council to put blue lights on the bridge.

Lizzie will put a request to the Facebook site Murwillumbah Matters controlled by Trish Webster to request help with crotcheting poppies for ANZAC Day
Rotary has Peace Poles where Rotary Clubs work in partnership with a local school. We are working with Mt St Patrick’s. Schools can choose three languages to convey their peace slogans.
Liz won the raffle. Cathy and Peter were thanked for our belated Christmas Party held at their home last weekend.
Fines were held.
