HAYLEY'S HERALD
What a busy weekend as Rotarians we have had!

We kick started on Saturday with the other two Murwillumbah clubs to have our turn at the Baton relay. What started with the idea of 100 laps for 100 years ended up being in excess of 100kms for 100 years. We were seen, we were heard and we were noticed in a very positive way.

We raised $386.70 from selling up cupcakes, this money will be donated to the Love Bites program.

I would like to say a massive thank you to Wollumbin Street Bakery for donating the cupcakes and also to Elizabeth for allowing us to use the Raine and Horne office as our base. And of course, thank you to everyone who contributed in any way that you did.

Today (Sunday) we gathered and attached a ton of crocheted poppies the town bridge, it has nearly filled one side and is extremely eye catching – again another great opportunity to be seen. Congratulations to the Poppies on Parade team, this has been a huge undertaking but it has definitely worth the effort.

This week’s speaker is a work colleague of Anne P, who will be educating us about the Covid vaccine.

Tickets for District Conference have gone on sale, there will only be 500 available so if you are wanting to attend here is the link to purchase and register https://www.trybooking.com/events/landing?eid=716063&. Registration close on May 1st at 12.00 – DON’T MISS OUT!!!!

Just another quick reminder that you can make donations to Rotary Foundation via the internet. If you would like to do this but are having trouble setting it up, please let me know. Alternatively, we are happy to take cash donations at the meetings.

Please check the Save the Date section – the slide into changeover is going to be a busy one!

Please don’t forget to put your breakfast order in.

See you Wednesday morning.

Cheers,
Hayley

The weekend started with the Baton Relay - 100 laps to commemorate 100 years of Rotary in Australia. Great to see members of the RC Murwillumbah Central and RC Rotary join us for a few laps. It was a wonderful way to showcase Rotary in and with our community, and the support we received was fantastic!

Rotary Baton Relay

“Celebrate our past, embrace our future”

The R100 Baton Relay is an event across Australia & New Zealand to celebrate 100 years of Rotary working in our communities. R100 Baton Relay will run throughout Australia, State by State, District by District, Club by Club.

The vision was to have every club participate and involve their communities, to bring local colour and culture, to own their celebration of 100 years of Rotary service with the R100 Baton.

Imagine Rotarians, local personalities, Councillors, community leaders, community groups, and everyday people around Australia & New Zealand carrying the baton of service, and passing it forward - engaging schools, community groups, businesses and media – walk, run, wheelchair, skateboard the baton to get the message across.

The perfect Community Service Project - involving the community, for the community and showcasing Rotary doing good in the world. Congratulations Kaileen Casey and everyone who contributed to this amazing project that will have a life beyond this year!
LEST WE FORGET
In addition to our Poppies on Parade raising awareness and honouring our armed forces, we are also raising money for Soldier On Australia.

ROTARY AND MATERNAL AND CHILD HEALTH

Preventing cervical cancer in Senegal through Peace Corps and Rotary

Until the 1950s, cervical cancer killed more women in the U.S. than any other type of cancer. Widespread screening, early detection, timely access to treatment, and interventions have drastically decreased the number of cervical cancer-related deaths in the United States, but the disease remains prevalent in the West African country of Senegal. Every year, more than 1,400 Senegalese women are diagnosed with cervical cancer, and hundreds of them die from it.

To Rotarian Dr. Andrew Dykens, a professor of family medicine at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), the situation is especially saddening given how easily this form of cancer can be detected and treated.

In 2010, Andrew Dykens launched Peace Care, a nonprofit that helps communities and organizations work together to bring resources where they are needed. “It dawned on me that the Peace Corps should be working more closely with, for example, academic centers, because these centers have technical expertise but don’t have a footprint in local settings,” he says. “Meanwhile, the Peace Corps has people who are extraordinarily knowledgeable about the local context.” A former Peace Corps volunteer himself, Andrew decided to combine his professional career, his involvement with Rotary, and his experiences with Peace Corps to help address a dire need in Senegal.

With the help of Peace Corps in Senegal, Rotarians in the U.S. and in Senegal, and UIC, Andrew is taking action against cervical cancer.

This story was originally featured in The Rotarian magazine by Anne Ford.
