“The World is moving so fast these days that the man who says it can’t be done is generally interrupted by someone doing it.”  Elbert Hubbard.

When I came across the above quote it reminded me of my Father saying many times to us as children and young adults - “There is no such word as can’t.”  I remember getting angry at him for saying this to me when I was struggling with something and complaining. As I grew to adulthood, became a nurse, wife and mother I realised how true these words are. I realised if I stayed with the thought and notion that it can’t be done, or I can’t do it then I’d miss out and that opportunity would be gone and someone else would get it.  Sure, there are times when I’ve listened to that word can’t.

At the moment in the world as it is with the COVID- 19 crisis, we could easily sit back as Individuals and a Rotary Club and say we can’t do this, can’t do that, can’t achieve that. This is not true. There are still many opportunities to achieve small and great things. The world is still moving and there are people still doing. Imagine if our medical personal said we can’t, or our teachers we can’t teach this way …. well we know the story.

Last week at our Rotary  Club Wednesday Zoom meeting we decided that we needed to be seen doing something supportive  of our local community. In 36 hours or less our Rotary Club had partnered with Jo at the Modern Grocer to provide free coffees to all Medical staff who come to the Modern Grocer for coffee. The word “can’t“ didn’t come into this and we didn’t wait for someone else to do this.  With our money and money donated, there is $500  to go to this initiative. Thank you to Jeff who organised this, Jo for agreeing to this and Marissa for the signs for the shop and Facebook. This Rotary initiative is not only acknowledging our medical people but also connecting with and supporting a local business in these tough times. Please continue to share, share on Facebook.

Tomorrow we are acknowledging the great work our teachers are doing and how they’re adapting to new teaching methods for our children. A basket of fruit, cheese and crackers will be sent to Wollumbin High School thanking them for their work.  Another way our Rotary Club is attempting to connect with, and support our community.  This time we used another local business the Tweed Fruit Exchange. Wollumbin High school is the local High school that Rotary Club of Mt Warning AM supports.

We’re hoping that we may be able to acknowledge our mothers in our 3 nursing homes for Mother’s Day next weekend … we’ll see how this goes when we find out what’s allowed to be taken into the Nursing homes.

These may be little things, but they are small steps getting out and doing something. We are showing that we care. We are connecting with the Community.

Yesterday morning I attended the Zoom Cluster meeting of Rotary Presidents in our Cluster of Tweed/Coolangatta, Banora Tweed, Kingscliff and Murwillumbah. President elects were invited as well. Hayley “zoomed in”.  Every Club of course is on hold at present.  Lots of activities are on hold. Club revenues will be decreased as they can’t hold their car boot sales, Barbecues etc . Some clubs are using Zoom, some are not. I came away from the meeting very proud of our Club and how we are managing and adapting to the new Technology. I have to say a big thank you to all our members for joining us at our weekly zoom meetings. We’ve done 4 so far. At this meeting I was able to update to other cluster clubs the activities and initiatives our Rotary Club is involved in.

May is Youth Services Month – This week’s meeting we’ll have Brendon Quinn Principal of Condong Primary School talking to us from a teacher’s point of view the effect of the COVID virus. Please try and join us. Should be interesting. Thank you, Judy, for organising this .

My Rotary  Account--  there are 13 members who don’t have a My Rotary account when I last looked. Please could you look at joining.

Board meeting 12th May .  Agenda items by next Friday to Stephanie please .

We are attempting to run our weekly meetings via Zoom as near to normal as we can. It is hard to keep looking and checking to see if anyone is missing out on contributing. Please remember to raise your hand and I will call your name to talk.  The 40 mins cut off is a little hurdle, please take the time to join back up it’s simple. Please read the newsletter for updates re this and the possible change in meeting ID and Password. it’s all new and we’re going along with it and succeeding … we can’t be stopped.

That’s it for this week. I hope you are all well. I encourage you all to remain in contact with each other, remain positive in your thoughts and actions. Keep your energy levels up. If you have a  problem or issue regarding Rotary, please contact me and I will try to help. If you need a chat, I’m good for that as well. Thank you to Judy and Cathy for joining the Zoom Friday arvo drinks and nibbles last Friday.  It was fun.

See you all Wednesday morning via Zoom.

Board members extra meeting this Tuesday Morning via Zoom

Take care.

Yours in Rotary,

Mary Lynch.

The NYSF Year 12 Program is designed to give students a broader understanding of the diverse study and career options available in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and to encourage them to continue their studies in these fields.  At the NYSF Year 12 Program run in January each year, participants will:

  • visit science and technology related laboratories and facilities,
  • go on site tours,
  • listen to lectures,
  • take part in workshops,
  • go to social events, and
  • participate in group activities that improve communication and presentation skills.
NYSF is a program dedicated to exposing outstanding year 11 students who are thinking about a career in science and engineering and related disciplines to major scientific institutions and researchers, so that they may make more informed choices for their future.
They are also given training in time management, interview skills and public speaking.
The Forum is fully residential and takes place during January in Canberra and Brisbane. All activities are fully supervised by student staff and resident Rotary counsellors.

IF YOU KNOW A YEAR 11 STUDENT WHO WOULD BE INTERESTED IN THE NATIONAL YOUTH SCIENCE FORUM, PLEASE LET JUDY KNOW. APPLICATIONS NEED TO BE ENDORSED BY A ROTARY CLUB. APPLICATIONS NEED TO BE TO THE CLUB BEFORE THE END OF MAY.

HAVE YOU CREATED YOUR MYROTARY ACCOUNT YET?

During this time, we would love it if as many people as possible could create a My Rotary account.

Here are the steps to help you set one up if you don't already have one -

1. Go to www.rotary.org/en
2. Click on My Rotary (it has a little house icon next to it)
3. Press on "Create an Account"
4. Use your name and email that is registered with Rotary
5. When you press "continue" it will ask you to provide more information
6. Follow the prompts

Notes of Zoom Meeting Jeff Egan

Looper Notes 29th April, 2020

President Mary acknowledged traditional landowners and welcomed everyone splendidly wearing a party hat as it was Hayley’s birthday.

Today was our 4th Zoom Meeting. Members spoke about how they honoured ANZAC Day. Many members said that they showed their respect by standing on their driveway. This week was the last week of the theme Maternal and Child Health.

Kaylene B saw research of Australian children immunised in Australia period ending December 2019. The National average for children being immunised in Australia was 94.3%.

Australian coverage

1year 94.3%

2years 91.57%

5 years 94.78%

One of the reasons for this good national average is the promotion that if your child is not immunised than family payments will be withheld.

Ideally the Government would like the immunisation target to be 95%. Kaylene B said that now with Covid 19 threatening many reluctant patents may choose to immunise their children.

Mary said that Northern NSW is lower than average. Each medical practice sends out immunisation reminders to parents. Year 7 girls and boys receive cervical cancer vaccine. Originally this vaccine was only given to girls but boys carry virus as well. Whooping cough is big in our area and adults who are with young babies need to have this vaccine to prevent babies contracting whooping cough before they are old enough to be vaccinated.

Cathy and Judy were not asked to deliver meals on wheels this week. Murwillumbah has less people receiving meals than Tweed.

Desiree and Lionel have been caring for grandchildren and are not used to 5:45am wake ups!

We sang Happy Birthday to Kaylene and Hayley.

Mary led a discussion on what could we do for Mother’s Day for our nursing home residents.

Ideas that floated around were to send fruit and/or flowers. It was decided that a phone call would be made to ask what would be the best idea as residents must be feeling isolated at this time. Marissa offered to make cards for the nursing homes.

Elizabeth won the Lucky Door prize for Johnny Francos. Members discussed their isolation activities and were asked to put a photo up on Club’s Facebook site.

Members were asked to tell parents of children going from year 11 to year 12 whether  their child would like to participate in the National Science Forum. As we haven’t had a Rotary Youth Program money could go towards the Science Program.

Members were reminded about club’s changeover on 20th June 2020. This Friday everyone is invited to log into Zoom at 5:45pm for afternoon drinks.

Judy said that next month’s theme will be Youth. Judy has invited Principal of Condong Primary School, Brendan Quinn to speak to us about how teachers and children are coping during lockdown. Mary also wants Haruka to speak again.

It was decided to send care packages (fruit) to Wollumbin High School for the teachers. Mary-Anne will organise $100 of fruit to be delivered next week by Tweed Fruit Exchange.

Jeff suggested that we give Modern Grocer $300 towards coffee for healthcare workers (doctors, nurses and paramedics). This will also help Modern Grocer with publicity and promote our club’s name. Kaylene B said that Ivan and she would donate $100 towards this cause. Julie also contributed $50. This makes $450 towards coffee for healthcare workers. Marissa said she would make a sign for Jo to place in her window. We could also advertise on our Facebook site. This helps to keep our name out in the community.

Ann P said it is stressful working on the front line.We were reminded to keep in contact with our buddies. RYLA sent Mary two care packages.
