Everyone was happy to see each other after our Christmas break. Leonie read out the ‘Words of Wisdom’.’ Start with Rotary and good things happen.’
Hayley’s Bad Joke for the week was:
Have you heard the rumour going around about butter?
Never mind, I shouldn’t spread it!
Everyone was asked to think about something good that happened during the holidays.
Jeannie gave a Services Report. She said that after looking at our Facebook page she was amazed what our club had achieved during 2020 despite COVID-19. There were 3 packing days throughout last year and 320 kits were given to You Have a Friend. Also, gifts were given to Aged Care homes for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and Christmas Day. Jeannie said that the Grant Application submitted in order to help finance the decorating of Murwillumbah’s Bridge on ANZAC Day had been successful.
Lizzie was very happy to announce that her employer had donated $1,000 towards our Solar Buddies Project. Susan led the ‘Auslan’ Happy Birthday to Peter. Elizabeth asked for a poppy pattern to give to a lady who wants to crochet poppies for us to help decorate the bridge for Anzac Day. Kaileen offered to give the lady a pattern. This lady has offered to give us a big blanket that we can raffle. Mary-Ann has five Christmas Cakes left over to sell. Also, if you need a name badge please contact Mary-Ann.
Cathy has decided to hold our ‘Christmas Party’ at her place on 30th January. In addition, Cathy and Judy are looking at the last weekend in February at Evans Head Caravan Park for a Club weekend away.
Judy introduced our Guest Speaker Mackenzie Turner who is a talented young lady who spoke about the impact Rotary has had on her life. Mackenzie moved out of home when she was 16 and acquired two jobs. She helped prepare sanitary packs for Days for Girls and was moved when these same packs were taken and given out in Kenya. Last year Mackenzie volunteered in Vietnam and taught English to orphans. She plans to stay in contact with the people she met in Vietnam. She was drawn to do a degree in the Humanities. She is now studying at UNSW and is in her 3rd year majoring in Politics and International Relations. Mackenzie would like to go overseas and use her degree in a productive way.
Lizzie thanked Mackenzie.
Marissa won the raffle and fines were held. After the meeting a Solar Buddies Committee Meeting was held.
