Continuing on the theme of Water and Sanitation, Lionel introduced 2 employees of the Shire Council, Elizabeth a Water and Efficiency Connection Engineer, and Brie, Manager of Water and Waste Operations who together gave an excellent presentation on Water Sanitation Issues in the Tweed Valley.
Some take home points were: Tweed shire residents use in excess of 200L of water/person/day. It is hoped we can reduce this to 160L/person/day by
-Encouraging installation of water saving toilets
-Encouraging residents to use the council rebate for showers, aerators, taps and mixers to convert to water saving ones
-Stressing the importance of fixing leaking taps and pipes
-Taking shorter showers (aim for 4 min)
-Don’t water lawns, let them green up with the rainfall if they go brown
They discussed climate change and the impacts on water management.
They brought jars containing wet wipes that had been in water for 4 years and showed no signs of biodegrading and strongly reminded everyone that ‘’All you put down the loo is wee, poo & toilet paper”
Jeff thanked Liz and Brie for their very informative presentation
Peter and Elizabeth issued fines
