“Rejoice with your family in the beautiful land of life“

                                             Albert Einstein.

Happy Mother’s Day everyone. For those lucky enough to have family close by to celebrate Mother’s Day with, enjoy being together. As Albert Einstein says in the above quote  “rejoice with your family in the beautiful land of life.”  Some of us remember and honour our Mothers in Heaven and think back on wonderful memories of happy times we shared with them. We never stop being a Mother no matter how old we become; the switch is never turned off.  We change our styles to suit the ages of our children and there are times when we look at ourselves and think that’s just like my Mother.

I think today we realise just how important family time is. Self-isolation has been particularly hard on the older members of our society. There were many of my patients this week wondering about how they were going to spend Mother’s Day without their families, especially their beloved grandchildren. Yesterday at the drive through Flu clinic there  were some patients having the flu shot so they could go and visit their Mothers in the Nursing Home or similar facilities. No shot, no visit. Dare I say the NRL could take a lesson from them!!!

This week’s meeting, we will continue to use the original Zoom meeting Number. I have asked for use of the District Zoom Meeting Number but so far haven’t heard back.  So, we will continue to have the 40 minute limit then we have to reconnect back on. If I do hear back before Wednesday,  I’ll email everyone on Clubrunner with a new meeting ID.

                                 Meeting ID  :  3175079242

Haruka will be talking to us about her hometown in Japan this week. This should prove very interesting. Haruka has certainly had an interesting 2nd half of her stay here in the Tweed. Tomorrow she goes back to school which will make her happy. There will be another guest speaker the following week as well, so our meetings are hopefully being varied. Our Youth Team is busy organising our meetings and maybe an activity.

Hopefully most of you saw our photos on Facebook of Judy, Helen and I delivering the Mother’s Day mugs filled with chocolates to Greenhill Nursing home on Friday. The staff were blown away by this act of kindness from our Club. Susan advised us that there was a shortage of mugs and Judy and Helen sourced some lovely mugs, roses chocolates and the beautiful crafted gift cards made by Marissa finished a simple but meaningful gift off.  29 ladies were remembered by our Club today and hopefully felt loved. The other Nursing homes were contacted but told us they were okay at this time.  Simple Acts of Kindness are all that is needed to be rewarding.

Thank you, Judy, Helen and Marissa. Thank you Don Parker for being the errand man.

Last week we delivered to Wollumbin High School a basket of cheese, crackers and fruit as a thank you and acknowledgement to the staff for their effort and hard work during this COVID- 19 crisis. How great was it to have Brendon Quinn talk to us on Wednesday about his school’s experiences during this present crisis. We  certainly gained an  informed perspective of the difficulties faced by our teachers. Thank you, Judy, for organising Brendon to talk to us.

We continue to acknowledge the wonderful work of  our health workers by our partnership with the Modern Grocer of a free coffee for all health workers. This has been well received and workers are grateful.

This Tuesday the Board will be meeting via Zoom. The next Board meeting in June will be a combined meeting with the incoming Board.

Last week we had Marissa’s birthday on Wednesday and tomorrow we have Cherry’s birthday.  Happy birthday to these lovely ladies. Cherry, we wish you a happy birthday for the 11th May .

As we are nearing the end of the Rotary year we are beginning to think ahead for the next year. We also are looking at our Rotary membership and some of us maybe considering whether we will continue on as members of our amazing club. There may be a number of reasons for members considering not renewing their membership . We naturally do not wish for members to resign but this is a personal thing . If you are considering this, we need to know your intentions before the end of  June please.  At this stage we do not know what our fees will be for the new Rotary year as the District has not advised us of their fees.

COVID safety app. – please consider downloading this app to your phones if you haven’t already done this.

AS we are not meeting in person weekly most of us are not contributing to Rotary International. We’ve spoken in recent meetings the importance of Rotary international and how the money we donate is used world-wide to make a difference.  We’ve even seen in recent times that the Stop POLIO  program has assisted in the fight against the COVID -19  in identification of contacts and  stopping the spread.  You can donate directly on your “My Rotary” account and receive a tax deduction.

Facebook :  There continues to be articles  posted on FB.  Please, please share these. Click like and share. This is one way of spreading the good that Rotary does. The article may not be of particular interest to you but it may be to someone else. Some people reading may not be Rotarians, but an article may interest them enough to consider coming to a meeting. The use of social media is so important.

So that’s all for another week. Buddies remember each other and keep in contact. Please continue to follow the rules of Social isolation. We don’t want to go backwards. Keep safe everyone remembering any little sniffle, sore throat, chill, or fever like symptoms, contact your GP and get tested. This all still applies to keep us safe.

Love to our members who are isolating because of compromised health.

Remember we may be isolation in the flesh from each other but that is not an excuse to be isolated from each other or our community. There are many ways to stay connected.  If you see or hear something that is needed let the Board know .

See you all Wednesday on Zoom.

Your in Rotary

The NYSF Year 12 Program is designed to give students a broader understanding of the diverse study and career options available in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and to encourage them to continue their studies in these fields.  At the NYSF Year 12 Program run in January each year, participants will:

  • visit science and technology related laboratories and facilities,
  • go on site tours,
  • listen to lectures,
  • take part in workshops,
  • go to social events, and
  • participate in group activities that improve communication and presentation skills.
NYSF is a program dedicated to exposing outstanding year 11 students who are thinking about a career in science and engineering and related disciplines to major scientific institutions and researchers, so that they may make more informed choices for their future.
They are also given training in time management, interview skills and public speaking.
The Forum is fully residential and takes place during January in Canberra and Brisbane. All activities are fully supervised by student staff and resident Rotary counsellors.

IF YOU KNOW A YEAR 11 STUDENT WHO WOULD BE INTERESTED IN THE NATIONAL YOUTH SCIENCE FORUM, PLEASE LET JUDY KNOW. APPLICATIONS NEED TO BE ENDORSED BY A ROTARY CLUB. APPLICATIONS NEED TO BE TO THE CLUB BEFORE THE END OF MAY.

HAVE YOU CREATED YOUR MYROTARY ACCOUNT YET?

During this time, we would love it if as many people as possible could create a My Rotary account.

Here are the steps to help you set one up if you don't already have one -

1. Go to www.rotary.org/en
2. Click on My Rotary (it has a little house icon next to it)
3. Press on "Create an Account"
4. Use your name and email that is registered with Rotary
5. When you press "continue" it will ask you to provide more information
6. Follow the prompts

Please let Simone know if you need any help with this. Having a My Rotary Account connects you with information and training relating to Rotary International and allows you to check and make a direct donation to the Rotary Foundation, learn about Club and District roles, exchange ideas and see the latest Rotary news.

Notes of Zoom Meeting Cathy Akehurst

Looper Notes 6 May 2020

A maximum of 20 members and our guest speaker, Brendan Quinn, attended our meeting by Zoom.

Simone presented President Mary with a Paul Harris Sapphire Medallion and Jeff with a Paul Harris Double Ruby Medallion for their financial contributions to The Rotary Foundation. Mary is now a PHF + 1 Member and Jeff a PHF +7 Member.

Jeff responded by saying that the Foundation carries out its motto of "Doing Good in the World". It is consistently rated as one of the top charities in the world by Charity Navigator and its administration expenses are less than 6% of total funds raised. Australia is a net recipient of the Foundation in that the Foundation distributes more funds in Australia than it receives from Australian donations.

Judy introduced Brendan to speak of the impact of Corona Virus in our schools.

Brendan has been teaching for 20 years. For the past 6 years he has been the Principal of the Condong Public School. The school has 16 staff including admin.

The school has a low Socio Economic Status (SES) and in the last 3 years has been affected by flooding and now the Coronas Virus.Currently, classes are mainly being conducted at home - 90% paper (being work books delivered to the students) and 10% on-line. The on-line per centage is lower than most as there is a lack of technology in many students' homes and internet reception in the area is poor. Also many parents don't want to be teachers.

A program called Google Classroom is being used. In some cases teachers had to make home visits to set up computers and the program. It's a massive learning curve for the staff.

It is planned for students to return to school one day a week on a staggered basis with this expanding to 2 days per week. Sanitization  is in place with students washing their hands on entering school, every half hour thereafter and on leaving school. At breaks teachers' aids wipe down tables and the school cleaner comes in for an hour during the day to clean surfaces. There has been difficulties in sourcing sanitizer.

Also social distancing needs to be managed.

In response to a question from Kaylene, Brendan said that the students need drink bottles.

Mary thanked Brendan for his presentation.

After the obligatory Zoom closure of the meeting after 40 minutes, the meeting recommenced with a general catch up as to what members have been doing since the last meeting.

Cherry won the Johnny Franco's $25 voucher and a feeble attempt was made to sing Happy Birthday to Marissa.Watch out for her present from Peter.

Jeff mentioned that Kingscliff Rotary's records and memorabilia were lost in the fire at the Cudgen Leagues Club this week and asked that we check our records to see if we have anything pertaining to Kingscliff which could be copied and sent to them.

Judy will inquire of the 3 local nursing homes as to what presents we may be able to deliver to their residents for Mother's Day.

Mary-ann is to check Haruka's availability to speak at our next meeting and Jeff is to check Nick Rackers' availability to speak at our following meeting.

Kaileen will see if business houses can supply water bottles for the students at Condong otherwise we will purchase a dozen bottles.

Registration for the Salvation Army's Red Shield Appeal Launch on Tuesday 12 May commencing at 7.15am is to be set out in the E-Spatch.

The meeting closed at 8.08am.
