Steph and Steve gave a presentation supporting this month’s theme on Water and Sanitation.
Access to fresh water is a human right. Access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene for all is one of the main lines of work of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
2.2 billion people lack access to safely managed drinking water services and 4.2 billion people lack safely managed sanitation services. Women and girls in poor countries are responsible for water cartage in eighty percent of households. This impacts on their education and health. One third of the world’s ground systems are already stressed. Countries building dams can restrict water to other countries.
Steve and Steph are involved with PICCA (Partners in International Collaborative Community Aid Ltd). A program for PICCA Project 2020-21 is promoting hygiene and sanitation in Quang Nham Commune, Vietnam. The project, in partnership with Hearts for Hue, is well developed with construction of wash and toilet facilities well underway.
There was a need for communal tap running water in this community. Sixty-four percent were using homemade latrines and open defecation is practiced. Fifteen families were selected on need. Currently eleven families have hygienic toilets. The community were educated to maintain toilets. Two people from each household attended training. The cost is less than $1,000 per toilet which includes training. Hayley thanked Steve and Steph.
Fines given out by Elizabeth.
