President's Message

Vale  Our Member Dowell Mitchell

Memorial Service
William Farmer Funeral Directors
12 Victoria Street
Eaglehawk

Friday afternoon August 25th at 2 PM.

Dowell would approve as a past president that we carry on with the club business:

Our Guest Speaker today, Joanne Trickey from Remembrance Parks Central Victoria, who admitted to being a Taphophhile,
with a penchant for monuments, fine tombstones and the like.
Her presentation begged extending our thoughts in many directions, in one of those mind maps.

Her “brief” includes
  • Managing the financial position of a “Class A” Government owned enterprise, contributing to the state,
  • governed by the Cemeteries and Crematoria Act 2003, and then having to “apply” for grants, to “run the business”;
  • Real estate management:
  • Engaging with the community vis à vis
    • Bendigo Interfaith Council
    • Cultural Inclusion
    • CoGB Public Space Plan
  • Normalising Death … in a “Death Denying” Anglo-Saxon culture; and,
  • Curating precious historic remnants of the past:

An outstanding example of historical structures is the oecumenical Mortuary Chapel
built probably by one George Pallet, in Gothic Revival style 1873, of rock-faced granite from Harcourt. The Chapel has no power,
thence treats the visitor to changing light patterns through the precious windows. However, “hold the phone” before planning your visit:
Restoration will bring her back to 1873 over the next eighteen months.

The Chapel is at the Back Creek Cemetery, once known to young Bendigonians as Spring Gully Cemetery, and now listed as The Bendigo Cemetery.

I’m looking forward to our club visit to Remembrance Parks.

The Child Safe Standards from the Child Wellbeing and Safety Act 2005 is a challenge for us and all Rotary Clubs.

Apparently, it came into force as of 1 August 2017.

110 Rotarians attended the Information Session at Melton Sunday.
A five page “Guide to the obligations of Rotary Clubs in District 9800” has been issued to all clubs.

Apparently, we fall into a category of:

 An organisation which might:
engage a child as a contractor, employee or volunteer to assist the entity in providing services or facilities.”

District 9800 advise that each organisation [read club] must:

  1. Develop strategies to embed an organisational culture of child safety, including through effective leadership arrangements
  2. Create a child safe policy or statement of commitment child safety
  3. Develop a code of conduct that establishes clear expectations for appropriate behaviour with children
  4. Develop screening supervision training and other human resources practices that reduce the risks of child abuse by new and existing personnel
  5. Develop processes for responding to and reporting suspected child abuse
  6. Develop strategies to identify and reduce or remove risks of child abuse
  7. Develop strategies to promote the participation and empowerment of children

Peter Elliott has generously donated hours, including studying the original Act, working with our Australia Day member
Peter Rainey and myself.

Our Protection Officer, Judy Miatke, Youth Services Director Martin Ruffell and I shall meet Monday August 28th
following due club process.

Meantime, I have approved a representative of our club seeking independent legal opinion locally.

As if that is not enough of a bureaucratic challenge, Peter Elliott our Treasurer is registering us as a fund raiser with respect to Consumer Affairs Victoria. This is an onerous necessary task.

Peter Elliott also reminded us that not all members have paid their subs.
Please contact Peter if you’ve “lost” your invoice.

Set Up each Wednesday:

I’ve asked Bruce to list TWO (2) Members each week for set up.
By the time, you re-arrange the tables and bring all the gear down from upstairs and set it up, thirty minutes have elapsed.
The PA and Screen are heavy.

I’ll write up an Instruction Sheet and laminate same, along with screen and projector instructions.

And, whilst I’m at it, an instruction sheet for Member on Welcome.

Judy Miatke reported that a cluster meeting of the local Rotary Clubs involved in the Valentines’ Day ball 2014 was held on
Thursday 17th Aug at the Bendigo Hospital Oncology Department.

The Clubs had been waiting for direction from Bendigo Health and have been advised that a patient scanner for the Oncology
Department will be purchased with $17,000 raised at this function.

And, a further $2,500 will be donated to the Renal Dialysis Unit towards new equipment.

Ray Carrington has reduced-price tickets for the Silvie Paladino and Victorian Male Welsh Choir Sunday afternoon concert, September 10th, to support the Ulumbarra Foundation.

Federation Picnic at Marong Sunday August 27th:
Kevin is still seeking volunteers, over the age of eighteen years.

Travellers:
Judy’s home from China
Paul Kirkpatrick and Clare are somewhere in Europe;
Hendy is still pulling that van around Australia;
Adrian’s off West with his van;
Hinneberg is often missing, with his camera;
Geoff and Wendy are ticking off Bucket Lists, and,
George rides to and from Williamson Street.

I don’t know what the smiling dog is trying to say.
However, it’s getting near that time when we’re entering stuff into the 2018 diary.
Conference is the weekend after the long Labour Day March weekend.
I’ve got good vibes about Peter and Warrnambool.
Would be a novelty to train it.

Registration Fee:
Only $200.00 [per person]
If you have not attended a Rotary District 9800 conference in the last ten years.

Otherwise: $345.00 Early Bird < 30 Nov 2017.

Nearer to home:
Think evening “do” Thursday October 12 to join “Let’s have Fun” Tony Plant at South Bendigo:
Silly hats an option to acknowledge Lift the Lid Mental Health Research funding by Australian Rotary Health.

I’m betting they keep Buckley …

Go and have a great week

George
