President Report
President Report 28 Oct
Greetings all,
Well no Zoom meeting this week but the Board met on Tuesday night and Secretary John will give an outline elsewhere in the Bulletin. Suffice to say an Outline  Plan for a membership drive was approved which had as a key point a move to raise our profile via social media and the website. Butch and Barb have posted onto our Facebook page recently and it has brought immediate interest. What we need to do it tell the world (well Bendigonians at least) about our good works. To plagiarize Rotarys motto “People of Action” We will need to be careful of peoples privacy in what we post. We cannot put photos of peoples faces on our sites without their permission.
I have had a call and email from Cathie at Foodshare about our Club supporting that group with volunteers over the Xmas holidays. It has changed a little since last year with us doing a Thursday rather than Tuesday and working with the Salvos rather than the Beischer St Op shop as they are not involved this year. The key dates are 21st Dec, and Jan  4th and 11th    We will have morning and afternoon shifts and need 3 people for each shift. In early Dec we will be looking for people to volunteer.
Don’t forget to record your random acts of kindness with Bruce via a little email. brucefraser8@bigpond.com
John Cannons brother Michael, who operates a freight business out of Shepparton was generous in collecting the pallet of FORaMEAL food parcels from Dandenong and delivering to Bendigo so we could pass on to Bendigo ethnic communities. I wrote to Michael to thank him and he responded very graciously.
Liz and I are planning on taking a couple of weeks away somewhere but hope we can still log in for Wednesday Zooms.
Rotary events coming up:
  • Nov 24th  at 7.30 am is the 28th Paul Harris and Business Breakfast. You need to book online for this event. There is no cost.
  • We have made a booking for the Changeover/Christmas function for 13 December at the Bendigo Pottery in Epsom. Will be for two course lunch and include presentation of PHFs.  Cost $30 includes a welcome drink. We will be looking for an indication later in November of who will be coming.
  • Volunteering to support Bendigo Foodshare  Dec 21, Jan 4 & 11.
Birthdays & Anniversaries
We missed Bruce Fraser’s birthday  last week on 26 Oct and Stan Hendy had on Friday 30th. Happy birthday fellas.
Would you believe no birthday at all (that I know of) in November.
John Harkin clocks up 25 years in Rotary on Nov 1st. And still serving.
Graph of the week
We might think we are getting on top of it, but the worlds not. (Teds comment)
Quote of the Week
"The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall." -Nelson Mandela

Joke of the week:

A policeman was rushed to the hospital with an inflamed appendix. The doctors operated and advised him that all was well. However, the policeman kept feeling something pulling at his pubic hairs.
Worried that it might be a second surgery and the doctors hadn't told him about it, he finally got enough energy to pull his hospital gown up enough so he could look at what was making him so uncomfortable. Taped firmly across his pubic hair and private parts were three wide strips of adhesive tape, the kind that doesn't come off easily --- if at all.
Written on the tape in large black letters was the sentence, "Get well soon from the nurse in the Landrover you booked for speeding last week."

100 Acts of kindness running total......... stands at 8 ( send them in folks)
1 Ted Polio walk October
2 Bendigo Creek clean up Stewie
3 Nick Christian visit for his 50th  Graeme & Rob
4 Carolyn’s parents have sold up in Maryborough and settled happily in Bendigo Retirement Village, Spring Gully.  My random act of kindness is that I do their approx. weekly grocery shopping and delivery, saving them risking Covid.  Although I do it often, I only claim one Random Act! JH
5 Just letting you know what I did today and perhaps it might be
considered a RANDOM ACT OF KINDNESS
A couple I know who live in Melbourne have a country weekender / bush block out at Marong.

My friend John has been battling cancer for 3 years and has not been able to do much property maintenance and now with Covid restrictions John and David have not been up to their property for a very long time.

The property has become quite overgrown so a friend of mine and I went out to the property today and did a few hours work on the rider mower and with a whipper snipper.
Just helping out a mate.
 Regards
 JC
6 I received a phone call from a friends wife. My friend has MND and is deteriorating quickly. He had a fall in the shower and his wife could not lift him so she rang myself and Pauline to come around and assist. We went around and assisted in getting him back to his wheelchair and assess to ensure he had no injuries as a result of the fall.
7 On another occasion while out walking we noticed a lost toy on the footpath. In very good condition.  On getting home I read a community facebook notice about a child who had lost a toy. I replied stated where we had seen it and was delighted to get another reply later on thanking me for the information and the child was very happy. Maurice
8 J C’s brother for transporting a pallet from Melbourne to Bendigo (Forameal)

Board Summary:
Zoom meeting 5pm Tuesday 27 October, with 9 Board members able to attend.

In addition to items in President Ted’s report (in this Bulletin), we accepted Treasurer Peter Elliott’s report which advised that:
- the majority of Club members have now paid their membership fees, and
- $500 has been paid to Foodshare, who normally receive our raffle proceeds and are suffering without them as we aren’t meeting face to face.
We are looking at 3 potential “Centenary of Rotary” projects and will consider with Board Papers on their merits at our next meeting and select one or more to support.  One project, Safe Families, involves the Guest Speaker at our club meeting on 18 November, Dorothy Gilmore, who will no doubt inform our decision.  The other 2 projects are Child Trauma Relief and End Trachoma.
Youth Service Director Cathie Miller’s paper and recommendation that we provide $1000 to support an identified student to complete Year 12 studies at Victory College was approved.
Chris Rankin is to be nominated as an Honorary Member as he continues to provide significant IT support to us without charge.
As I advised by email recently, the Annual General Meeting (for the year 2019-20) is scheduled for the Club meeting of Wednesday 25 November.  It should run for around 10 minutes, with
  • previous minutes
  • Treasurer’s financial statements
  • Nomination of Office Bearers for 2021-22
  • Renewal of Honorary Memberships, and
  • General business, if any.
Directors’ reports for Youth, Club and International Services were accepted, all affected by Covid restrictions in one or more ways. We resolved to make more use of the Club FaceBook page under Barb Mitchell and Maurice Woodburn.
Next Board meeting is Tuesday 8 December at 5pm, most likely on Zoom.
John Harkin
Secretary

Two Catherine McAuley College students have been accepted in the National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) Year 12 Program for 2021. The successful applicants, Deanna Duane and Toby Costigan, will be financially supported to take part by the District 9800 Rotary Clubs, along with two students from Bendigo Senior Secondary College and two from East Loddon P-12 College.

The NYSF Year 12 Program is a 10-day program designed to give students a broader understanding of the diverse study and career options available in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and to encourage further pursuit of the subjects.

Deanna said “I applied for the program because I really love STEM and was excited by the thought of learning more about possible career pathways. At the moment I don’t really know which area of STEM in particular I want to pursue, as everything interests me so much.”

Due to COVID-19, the NYSF will not be run as a residential program in 2021. Instead, participants will take part in an online program across two weeks in January featuring all the STEM elements the NYSF is famous for: speakers, behind the scenes tours, workshops, debates, expos and social activities.

If COVID-19 restrictions permit, the January program will also include local events and visits, enabling students to safely engage with their peers and experience the networking and community aspects of the program.

Participants will join the extensive alumni network of over 12,000 individuals who have previously attended the forum and will gain access to a lifetime of STEM professional development and peer networking events. Throughout the rest of 2021, participants will also be able to access a wide variety of NYSF Connect Alumni events for further professional development and networking.

Toby has been inspired by his teachers to consider teaching as a profession. “I’m still working things out,” he said. “I am looking forward to the magnitude of the experiences NYSF offers, and it is one of the main reasons I ended up applying.”

Some of the keynote speakers engaged for the coming program include Nobel Prize Winner and Astrophysicist, Prof Brian Schmidt, ABC Identity and Science Communicator, Dr Karl Kruszelnicki, Women in STEM Ambassador and Astrophysicist, Prof Lisa Harvey-Smith, Australia’s Chief Defence Scientist, Prof Tanya Monro, along with many more.

One of Rotary’s objectives is to provide innovative and practical opportunities, to assist and motivate children and young people to acquire learning and life skills. Youth Director, Ms Joy Bruce said that Rotary District 9800 is proud to support the students with information, interviews and a financial contribution. Deanna is supported by the Rotary Club of Bendigo Sandhurst and Toby by the Rotary Club of Bendigo.
