Guest Speaker
It was nice to welcome fellow Rotarian, Janette Etherington, as guest speaker to our meeting. Janette is the Rotarian Engagement Officer for Interplast Australia and New Zealand. Interplast is derived from the two words international and plastic and serves to build lives again through repairing bodies. Interplast started in 1983 and involves surgeons, anaesthetists and nurses visiting developing countries in the Pacific region to repair congenital deformities as well as those caused through accidents. The Royal College of Surgeons generously shares office space for the administration of Interplast.

Interplast is jointly funded by Rotary, DFAT and donations from various philanthropic groups and individuals. With the medical professionals donating of their time each visit costs between $40,000 and $50,000. Interplast turns over about 2 million dollars annually.

Janette showed some very moving photographs particularly of children who face a life of being ostracised unless surgery to correct their deformities can be arranged. The before and after images were amazing. In addition to the visits for surgery in developing countries there is a focus on building the capacity of the local medical profession.  Training is conducted in Australia and New Zealand as well as the on the job opportunities which present during visits.

Teams visit each destination to undertake a needs assessment. This ensures that there are adequate health facilities in which to perform the surgery. Sadly, some areas do not have proper facilities and supplies of electricity and thus do not qualify for a visit. These visits include communication with local Rotary Clubs to further build local awareness and support. Sadly, the coronavirus is already impacting on the work of Interplast with the need to cancel a recent planned visit.

We appreciate the comprehensive overview provided by Janette. It is reassuring to know that our Rotary Club is part of a movement of Rotarians which is transforming the lives of many people.

Notices
From the Rotary Club of Bendigo South

One of our club members has a great relationship with Stephanie Woollard the founder of Seven Women. Stephanie has been engaged to speak here in Bendigo at a district conference that is scheduled one week prior to the 9800 event. She has also offered to provide an evening for us during her time back in Australia. We were able to book an available date at the Star Cinema for Wednesday March 11. It is not actually our club’s meeting night but as we are always very flexible to accommodate opportunities, we do never hesitate to change a meeting night if there is something worthwhile on offer. I would encourage you all to consider offering this event to all your members and also to think about people who you may know outside Rotary who would be interested in learning all about the great journey Stephanie Woollard has been on and where she will go into the future. For further information re Seven Women I would encourage you all to go onto the website listed on this attached flyer. Also happy to take calls on 0408590589 or respond to your emails if requiring further information.
