President's Message

Men in Strange Hats;
Rotarian from Vellore, India;
Doctor Debbie an apology;
Victor from France;
Tony from Myers Flat;
Dowell in a Holding Pattern; and,
Doug Lougoon in the Chair.

The Bridge Hotel again a buzz.

Hugh Skiel was our guest speaker, from the Rotary Club of Vellore, District 3230, India.  His club was founded by Christian Medical College [More on “CMC” later], doctors, especially a missionary surgeon, one
Dr. Sommervel, and chartered on 5th of March 1948. [1948 !!!]  One of the first clubs in the South of India and probably among the earliest in the whole of India. His wife Debbie was an apology this morning.

Hugh’s “bio” runs to the size of a small bible.

He and his medical doctor wife Debbie are volunteers at Christian Medical College, funded by their Church in the UK.  His portfolio, as an accountant is development, promotion and fund raising.

Our Evelyn Lehmann has introduced Hugh, courtesy her connections to the “bigger than Ben Hur” Christian Medical College at Vellore, via one of Bendigo’s medical heroes, Dr John Gault.

Hugh has supplied me with two booklets:
        Christian Medical College
Facts & Figures 2016 to 2017
                Year Book 2016,
And a CD ROM of very sensitive appealing professional videos.

I just don’t know where to start to describe this Christian Medical College:

Let’s try and imagine a conglomeration of Monash Medical Schools; Allied Health and Nursing at Latrobe and Deakin Universities, working with Peter Mac, The Royal Melbourne; The Childrens’ and The Womens’, and a few rural Hospitals all without [that’s without, that’s spelled w-i-t-h-o-u-t] government funding, catering to all socio-economic classes.

Number of employees:                   9,387
Number of Inpatient Beds:              2,999         [Royal Melbourne: 571]

Statistics for year 2016

Inpatients treated:                136,895
Outpatient Consultations:               2,719,558            8,313 per day
                        Births:               19,099                52 per day …
Anaesthesia [My interest}
                        In OR                 26,098                72 major per day …
                        Outside OR:        10,477

As a summation, it seems to be an ambitious, robust set of hospitals offering quality 2017 world standard care and tertiary education, all within a Christian caring ethos, financially self-sustaining, given philanthropic subsidy, and affordable for all members of society, whatever fee they can proffer.

Philanthropic support comes from “Friends of Vellore”, India, Australia, Germany, Sweden, Canada, USA, and, UK.

Victor:
Shades of Peter Sellers as Inspector Jacques Clouseau, came to mind as we listened to a very confident Victor, Youth Study Exchange student from Lille, France hosted by RC’s Eaglehawk and Bendigo South.
A real pleasure to experience his presentation.
He gets my “He’ll go far” stamp of approval.

Tony:
Tony [Plant] our man in Myers Flat paraded in his silly hat advertising a RC Bgo South evening in October [12th] to celebrate Australian Rotary Health Lift The Lid Hat Day, and raise some lucre for Mental Health Research.
We all know that if Tony’s involved it’ll be a fun evening.
Sneak a look at:

Which reminds me:
EH RC Trivia night was a real hoot.
We now know that Evelyn is a champion at air saxophone playing.
Sincerest congratulations to EH RC. See you in 2018 !!!

Rochester soldiered on with their Farm and Road Safety yesterday.
Bryan [Griffiths] reported:
“Extra shed cover was made, overall a successful day.”

Dowell:
Dowell is in a holding pattern, medically, giving his body a rest, in Hospice Care at Bgo Health.
[Hospice Care nowadays has a very different meaning, “to old”: It’s now a caring opportunity to pause and re-group].

On the horizon:

Sunday 20th:Changes to Child Welfare and Safety Act Info session.

Federation Picnic Marong Sunday August 27th

I’m meeting Ted at OTIS Mandurang, today Thursday to discuss tree planting.
Remember: Ian Riseley’s every Rotarian plants a tree before April 2018.

DAA:  Ray Carrington remains in touch with a very enthusiastic bunch of Rotarians.
Have a “Butcher’s Hook” at:  http://www.disasteraidinternational.org/

Brrrr  “Snow down to 600 metres” tomorrow Friday …

I’ve bought the plant-in-late-winter seedlings … Demands my multi-layer fine merino “Tasmania Gear” to be out there … I think I’ll read those books

See you Wednesday

FROM THE BOARD!!!!!!!

The Board decision was to donate the surplus funds to Bendigo Foodshare. We have obtained two collection tins from them. The agreed approach is therefore:

  •          The raffle prizes be arranged by a member in advance with reimbursement for costs undertaken via direct debit from the Treasurer on a regular basis (receipt to be provided). This is what is presently being undertaken via John Cannon;
  •          Raffle monies be used in the first instance to pay for the guest speakers breakfast on the day;
  •          Any surplus be placed in the collection boxes for Bendigo Foodshare (one will be kept by the President and one by the Treasurer, so at least one should be available at every meeting);
  •          Where no speaker is at the meeting or does not require breakfast, all proceeds be placed in a Foodshare box;
  •          We see no particular need to collate cash amounts and record them on the day, however at least two members should collect the money, pay for the speakers breakfast and ensure the remaining funds are placed in a Foodshare tin (Chair to organise);
  •          When a tin is full it will be provided directly to Foodshare and the money counted and noted in the Treasurers Report/Bulletin as appropriate.
If anyone has any different understanding than this, please advise before these details go in the Bulletin

Cheers
Peter Elliott

Jokes

Bazza and Shazza from Mt Druitt were on holiday in the UK and were walking along a country road when Bazza suddenly shouted,

"Crikey, they've buried someone by the side of the road, and you should see how old he was when he died - 175!"

"If he was that old we would've heard of him - what was his name?" asked Shazza.

"Miles, from London." said Bazza.
