A special welcome to our newest member Ian Beckerleg who was inducted last Wednesday morning. Ian was introduced to our club by Peter Elliott, and his classification will be Electrical Engineer. Peter’s introduction included his long-standing friendship and admiration for Ian’s professional skills throughout his career.  He also espoused his belief that Ian has the ability to contribute and complement our ideals of Rotary with humour and a sense of FUN.

Thanks to all Board members who attended last Tuesday evening.  It was a busy agenda with some of following items discussed:
  • Easter Festival Opportunity. As part of our sponsorship to the Easter Festival, our club was entitled to a free float entry into either the Bendigo Advertiser Gala Parade OR the Fosterville Gold Torchlight Procession. The Board decided that due to our other commitments over Easter, we would decline this offer.
  • Our club has agreed to provide financial support for the Discovery Science & Technology Centre’s 2020 School Holiday program; this funding, of $3,200, will contribute to the running of the Centre’s Planetarium.
  • Risk and Audit Governance Committee reported on progress to date regarding the future operation of the Timor Leste Knitting Program.

Items of Interest.
  • Scottish Rotary Friendship exchange team will be arriving in Bendigo on Monday 25th October and leave 31st October. They will have been previously hosted by Camberwell and Gisborne Rotary Clubs. The team consists of 4 couples and 2 singles.  If any members wish to become hosts or be involved in the planning or content of the itinerary, please contact Ray (International Director).
  • Public image workshop has been planned by District for Sunday 17 May at La Trobe University, Bendigo. Training can also be accessed by Rotary Public Image WEBINAR: Branding Rotary, Thursday, 5th March 2020, 7pm Sydney (EDT) time. This webinar is open to all Rotarians, not just the Club Public Image team members. Templates in the Brand Centre will be used to create personalised logos. • Guest Speaker
  •
  • It was a pleasure to welcome Liz Bannon, fellow Cluster Rotarian of the Kangaroo Flat Club, as our guest speaker. Liz first came to know about the Rotary focus on Peacebuilding and mediators beyond borders whilst she was attending a conference in Hamburg. The Institute of Economics and Peace prefers to conceptualise peace as something positive where the community feels safe, where there are good education and medical facilities and where there is sound government rather than thinking about it as the absence of conflict.
  •
  • Liz related a lot of examples where individuals and groups have taken positive steps in challenging communities to build peace and wellbeing. The distribution of polio vaccine in Sri Lanka and the work and persistence of freedom fighters in Kosovo were two examples where peace building efforts have made a real difference to communities. There are groups in Thailand which are a critical part of the rebuilding process and efforts in Myanmar are helping to build bridges between the deep divides in that country. In Cameroon training in prisons is helping build the necessary skills to lead a peaceful life on release and an American couple has taken up the cause of trafficked women.
  • Liz is not suggesting our Club takes on a major cause like the examples she outlined. In fact many Rotary activities do build peace, it is more about being conscious of the importance of this in our service to the community. To become a peace building Club a committee of two need to take responsibility to undertake the online training. As a club we might be more conscious of planning ways to celebrate International Peace Day on September 21st. There may also be possibilities to include the theme of peace in next year's celebration of the centenary of Rotary in Australia.
  •
  • Interestingly the Institute judged the most peaceful country to be Iceland and the least peaceful to be Afghanistan. Thank you Liz for raising our awareness and for sharing so many positive stories from right around the world.
