President's Message

So delightful, on the verandah of the Sexton’s home at Spring Gully Cemetery or, the “Bendigo Remembrance Park” early
Wednesday morning.
It was worth going just for the breakfast fare Madeline [Coles] had prepared.

Geoff Michell brought us the sad news that a former member and past president had passed away:

Vale:  Paul Francis BIRD

Paul was a well-respected member of the RC Bendigo Sandhurst from 01/12/1992 until 30/06/1998 when he resigned because of work commitments.

He served as Secretary 1993/94 and President 1994/95.

During his Presidential year the Club ran its inaugural Bendigo Business Excellence Awards which ran very successfully as a
Rotary project for 21 years and is still going, run by the Bendigo Business Council.

He was also responsible for the Club donating an Insulcot to the Special Childcare Unit at the Bendigo Hospital and was
very supportive of The Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal.

Our club “resurrected” the Horizons Group of Past Presidents and Treasurer at Pat’s Pub Monday evening. A robust no-nonsense meeting, twelve attendees and four apologies, all done and dusted within the hour. We engaged Geoff Michell in the car park later, as he wandered down Arnold Street, from his Bendigo Health duties.

Principal results:
        Horizons Committee of five appointed;
                That Horizons Committee to review Strategic Plans
        President instructed to approach certain members to engage them in the opportunity of President Elect or President Nominee positions;
        Support for Martin Ruffell [IT] to engage Information Technology external paid expertise to correlate website [with special reference to markets]; social media and ClubRunner.

        Support for President and Board to offer increased financial support to local schools, and increase scholarships Maubisse Timor-Leste.
        The Horizons Group was pleased to hear that the Membership Committee is “re-gaining traction”.

President George will represent the club at the official visit of The Hon Linda Dessau AC Governor of Victoria to Bendigo, Wednesday December 6th, and Awards Night Weeroona College.

Rob Rosaia and George will attend the debrief and “Thanks” get together of Bendigo Cycling Classic. Rob has a Board Paper in his pocket, to direct funds to OTIS via the Cycling Classic.

BOM forecasts advising Arks has caused cancellation of RCoBS catering for CoGB Christmas Tree lights Dec 1st.
L’Arche event Sunday near St Theresa’s is still on.

Foundation Member Pat Sheehan and George attended the Foundation Information Dinner at Kangaroo Flat Sports Club, whilst other members got to the 4F’s evening at the Queens Arms.
Dinner was an excellent networking, catch-up social evening, and some positive Foundation tales. Pat to report to Board.

Martin, and George, ever up for a chat, met Julie Hommelhoff Principal of Lightning Reef Primary School. Julie is to bring to Martin three proposals, each on one “Warwick Cavell” page.
These conversations may include Rotarians armed with WCC cards and Police Checks assisting with the every-morning school breakfasts.

At Bendigo Maubisse Friendship Committee meeting Dec 1st:
  • Heather Ridge acknowledged our Board’s generous funding of scholarships at Maubisse;
  • Rod Flavell flagged he and I meeting Kim Groizard at RC Albert Park to discuss “moving” their Rotary funded dental project from Cambodia to Maubisse; also acknowledging Patti Cotton’s offer of her knitters donating toothbrushes;
  • We noted details of the committee mounting a “community” site at Australia Day again.

Martin [our “Why did George give him three portfolios?”] busy Director is also having a chat to a potential new member.

At the time of writing, our Ark has not been launched. Animals as restless as pax on QF2 held on a SYD taxi way.
BOM radar’s “drenching” other bits of the map, as I hear the first rumblings from Thor the Viking God.

Looking forward to our Christmas at Sutton Grange Winery Sunday 10th.  “Grange” reminds me that John Jones of Rotary Club Eaglehawk has tickets for the “game gamblers”:
$200 a ticket for nine Grange Hermitage. Maybe ten of us at twenty bucks a throw as a “syndicate”.

See you Wednesday.
Please note that the Annual General Meeting of the Rotary Club of Bendigo Sandhurst Inc. will be held at 7.45am on 6th December 2017 at the Bridge Hotel, Bridge Street, Bendigo.

The Agenda and Financial statements for 2016/17 will be circulated shortly.

If you have any queries please contact me on 0418 992 425

We look forward to keeping you informed and to seeing you there.
