Guest Speaker.
Curator-Soldiers Memorial Institute Military Museum
Kirsten has had an interesting career as a curator nationally and internationally. She has been the curator at Castlemaine gallery for nearly 16 years and now is  part time in Bendigo for 3 days per week. In her brief time in Bendigo, Kirsten has managed to access over $250  k of showcases and memorabilia display cases from the recent ANZAC Spirit tour. This is due to her close association with Canberra and key personnel across the country. These facilities will enhance the displays to be set up in the new museum in Bendigo, where over the last 20 years over 10,000 items have been collected. Prior to this for nearly 40 years donated items were stored under the Secretary's desk and then periodically sent off to the National War Museum in Canberra. All of the existing artefacts were transferred to 4, 40foot containers for temporary storage. The restoration of the new museum commenced in April 2017, when after the floorboards were removed it was discovered that the Hustlers Mine shaft was located adjacent to the fireplace. This now was found to be the source of the sulphur like smell which was often smelt inside the building. The poppet head was removed in 1917 and is now in Rosalind Park. The new museum will have more storage and display spaces and currently WW 1 information panels are being assembled and the WW 11 designs are now being reviewed, prior to the highly anticipated opening on November 15, 2018. Further plans for expansion to include all conflicts is planned. Kirsten then responded to numerous questions from the floor.
