Club Activities

With Gerard in the chair this week, we revisited the demise of the sergeants session and other former Rotary rituals, with the humour that only Gerard can provide!
Paul and Rob gave an update on the Jamshod dinner on Sunday night. Eleven Hazara Afghanistan refugee men and two young boys shared dinner with us and retold some of their stories of how they arrived in Australia. Some are reunited with their families with many still being separated from their loved ones who are mainly in Pakistan. Thanks to Paul and Rob who asked many questions, which were answered honestly and with palpable emotion. Neville Sharpe and Nick Christian have volunteered to attend the next dinner on Sunday August 26th.
I will be requesting the Board that the club support these dinners with a small financial contribution. Thanks to Kaye Graves and Ken Gilchrist for their untiring support for these men and their families.
Bruce gave a quick reminder to members on the Reclink BBQ on the 15th, Federation Picnic on the 26th 8 am to 4 pm and White Night on Saturday night September 1st, 8 PM to 2 AM.

Jim provided an update on the schedule over the next few weeks; August 1, John Harkin on his pilgrimage to the Isle of Man August 8, Chris Rankin on Club Runner update for members August 9, board meeting at Bruce and Sally Frasers August 15, Board report form Directors and planning for Fed picnic and White night August 22, Kaye Graves, Bendigo Community Health and Refugee support. Partners  are very welcome to attend this meeting as Kaye is also looking for volunteer support for women and their families.
August 29, vocational visit to the science and Discovery Centre in Bendigo.
The following weeks  see Jim Evans from the Historical Centre and Gaelle Broad on her journey through the media and life.

Jim also reminded members to keep him informed of any likely speakers or places to visit. Given the number of members away nationally and internationally, I am sure that there will be a wealth of stories to be told.

Our guest speaker for the morning was Meagan Adams from Bendigo Health who spoke on the topic of Advance Care Planning. Thanks to Judy Miatke for putting this on the agenda.
It has been identified that 85% of people die after a chronic illness and the other 15% from a sudden accident or rapid illness causing death without warning. With over 80% of deaths occurring whilst under the care of a health professional, 50 % of those people are not in a position to being able to make a sound or rational decision on their future health care.
As the law changed in March 12, 2018, a health care practitioner must look for the Health care direction provided by the patient. This is all about what happens to you before you die, not afterwards and has two parts, the Instructional Directive and the Values Directive (what is important to you). It is important that you have identified someone who can speak for you, someone you can absolutely trust, they must accept the role and the form must be witnessed by two people, ( your GP, JP and anyone over 18, not named in the document.) Megan was then bombarded with many questions, with Chairman Gerard having to disappear into the toilets to take an urgent phone call. Much to our relief Gerard returned to finish of the question time and meeting albeit without his super man outfit.
Thanks Meagan for a sobering presentation on a topic which all of us will have a vested interest.

ROSTER
It has come to my notice that newer members of our club might not know our BBQ history and our careless way of slipping in shorthand. (Fed Picnic, Reclink, White night etc)
FEDERATION PICNIC: A vintage and Veteran car, truck and tractor rally at Marong (Trotting Track) We have a large Marquee and generally two BBQ's as well as drinks and we also receive gold coin donations at the two entrances. Date: Last Sunday in August. Time: 8am to 4pm, with a set up crew a couple of hours earlier. Shifts from 2hrs to all day as suits.
RECLINK: A local football match held at California Gully oval. On a Wednesday from 12.30pm till 2pm Reclink is a group supported in Bendigo by the Salvation Army and comprise men and woman in a combined team from disadvantaged backgrounds. One BBQ, sausages in bread and softdrinks (Donatedby our club).  Our BBQ's are an important fellowship component of our club.
I will update members at a later date about our many opportunities to support Club activities with a BBQ.

FACTOIDS
Amazing Facts

During Prohibition, moonshiners would wear "cow shoes." The fancy footwear left hoofprints instead of footprints, helping distillers and smugglers evade police.

In 1974, the Journal of Applied Behaviour Analysis published a paper titled "The Unsuccessful Self-Treatment of a Case of 'Writer's Block.'" It contained a total of zero words.

Guinness estimates that 93,000 litres of beer are lost in facial hair each year in the UK alone.
