President Report
President Report 14 Oct
Greetings all,
Great to see a familiar face in PDG Bronwyn on Wednesday and she has not dropped the ball, still doing great work in the name of Rotary.
FORaMEAL food parcels  At last we got feedback from the people that the parcels were targeted at. And they like then and want more. Thanks to John C & Graeme. The Karen community are the prime recipients and some to the Afghans. Thanks in advance to JCs brother who has offered to deliver a pallet to Bendigo. We have responsibilities to get a signed MOU and photographic evidence of delivery and consumption.
Thanks to Stew and the crew for the Creek cleanup.

Guest Speaker
Bronwyn Strephens

The guest speaker for the meeting was PDG, Bronwyn Stephens. Bronwyn reminisced about her previous visits to Bendigo when she was able to enjoy fellowship with club members over breakfast and a coffee. In recent times Bronwyn has been involved in a joint project with other Rotary Clubs and Community Groups to provide care packs for patients admitted to the Psychiatry Unit of the Alfred Hospital. Often homeless people and those admitted to the unit come with little more than what they are standing in. The care packs provide personal items which raise their spirits and send the message those others care.

The Alfred has around 1,200 admissions annually, 68% of these are involuntary admissions. Patients stay on average for seventeen days. The provision of personal care packs and in some cases sets of new clothing enable patients to have more of a homely experience that would otherwise be quite clinical. The care packs provide staff to reach out to newly admitted patients in a personal way which encourages connectedness and builds relationships. These factors have a critical bearing on the effectiveness of treatment.

Bronwyn doesn't see this project as continuing in its current form in the long run. It is very labour intensive and draws on the generosity of an already busy group of volunteers. She has commenced plans to approach corporate groups which might be prepared to take over the project. It was revealed during the meeting that Chemist Warehouse spends $124 million annually on advertising. It would seem this would be an ideal way to use some of that budget as a means of promotion and service. Bronwyn would welcome any support in trying to convince corporates of the benefits of this project.

It was a pleasure to reconnect with Bronwyn and to hear about this wonderful initiative. At the beginning of the meeting Stan quoted the Rotary ideal "One profits most who serves first." It is hard to imagine a Rotarian who embodies this ideal more than Bronwyn. We very much appreciate the time she committed to be with us and thank her for her most informative presentation.
Guest speaker for 7.30am Wednesday 21st October
Stephan Marantelli, author of Three Brothers: When George Washington and Edmund Barton Sat Down To Dinner

Talk outline
This year's US presidential election is guaranteed to be as rancorous as the last. And remember all the post-election acrimony
in 2016 about Hillary Clinton winning the popular vote, but Donald Trump winning the Electoral College vote?
So, how do Americans elect their president?  Why did they invent this crazy Electoral College system and why do they
still use it?  Is there any way to reform it?

About Stephen E. Marantelli
Stephen is a Melbourne-based barrister, speaker and author. His historical book
Three Brothers: When George Washington and Edmund Barton Sat Down To Dinner –
is a witty behind-the-scenes peek into the rough and tumble world of nation building as told by the first captains
of the American and Australian Ships of State. Stephen has a passion for America history, in particular the history of the presidency.
