President Report 23 Sept
Greetings all,
We all have just a little more freedom and promises from the powers in charge (Dan I think) that more easing is on the way. The big smoke looks like they are getting on top of it, and we need that because, we in the bush, will not get most of our freedoms back until Melb have caught up.
I had a good chat with Jason at the Bridge but he still thinks it will be quite a while before we can all get there for breakfast. He can take bookings for small groups inside and more outside, so if you can help him out he would appreciate it. We have a couple of “Guess who is coming to lunch” events happening there this week.
I think we all learnt something from Jessica about the difficulties in organizing RYLA during a pandemic. As Rotarians we can be very proud of the enthusiasm generated in the alumni for this program.
Rotary events coming up:
You need to book online for all these events. There is no cost.
And an advance suggestion for October and End Polio Now. Let’s get together on a walk. We will plan it.
More profiles for Bruce and the Bulletin please.
Geoff Michell happy birthday for Sunday 27th    Julia Grace 2 years in Rotary Friday 25th
Things on my agenda. Get more people to sign up for Working with Children, (expect an email if you are not there already) and helping arrange with Stewart Annan a working bee to clean up along the Creek in White Hills.

Guest Speaker

Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA)

The guest speaker for the meeting was Jessica Wheeler, the Chair of RYLA for District 9800. Jessica is a graduate of  RYLA, is a member of the Rotary Club of Melbourne Park and has participated in the Oceania RYLA Extension Program. The graduates of RYLA clearly appreciate the opportunities for the building of confidence, teamwork and relationships that has resulted from their experiences. The Program is held each year for a week in December for about twenty five participants at Camp Oasis, Mt. Evelyn.

The District has responded proactively to the challenges of the pandemic. An alternative online program which will be held over a six week period in February and March 2021 has been planned. The Program consists of four modules which will require a commitment for participants of two hours each week. There are built in opportunities for reflections between the online weekly sessions. Jessica suggested that it would be good for sponsoring Clubs to make contact with participants during the period and perhaps even invite them to a meeting.

The new developments in the program will be a useful resource which can be built into the Program on an ongoing basis. Another positive outcome is that there will be two opportunities for young people to access RYLA in 2021, the online version in February/March and the face to face version in December. In the meantime members are invited to think about suitable young people, including those from the Afgan Community, the Club can sponsor. Members appreciated the comprehensive background information provided by Jessica. We thank her for taking the time to be our guest and we wish her all the best for the further planning of RYLA.

Time to Write Your “Member Behind the Badge” profile
I don’t know about you, but I am missing the more personal side of meeting fellow Rotarians.
So, we are looking for people to write a little 250 word personal profile so we can publish one a week
in the Bulletin, to bring us all a bit closer again. Even if you’ve presented a Life history in the past there’ll
be new members who didn’t hear it, or things that have changed in your life. Below are some suggestions.
You don’t have to answer them all if you don’t want too. So while you’re reading this, jot down some notes and send them in to brucefraser8@bigpond.com

Tell us:
  • Where you were born, who your parents were and what work they did.
  • Where did you go to school and what subjects did you like best (and least).
  • What was your first job? (and your 2nd? 3rd? 4th?).
  • What events or who has had an influence on the type of person you are today.
  • Where did you meet the most important person/people in your life?
  • What’s your favourite holiday spot?
  • What are the passions that have stayed with you all your life?
  • Tell us the best joke you ever heard, or just look for one on YouTube. (attach a link)
Find an early picture of yourself and another more recent to include.

You may recall Ian McBurney, Director and Executive Officer of the bHive Cooperative, who was our guest speaker for our Wednesday morning meeting on 24th June. The bHive enterprise is built on the importance of the local community, and connecting people first of all in neighbourhood groups, to take advantage of social and economic opportunities (Bulletin No. 47 refers). Ian explained that a key component will be a new on-line platform called “villages” aimed at local  (1km radius) resource sharing and support. He contacted us again this week to advise that the launch of “villages” is close and to see if any club members would be keen to act as ‘champions’ to support the roll-out. See following from Ian with a link where you can register an interest.

Become a Bendigo Villages Champion. Recruiting up to September 24! If you live in Bendigo and you’re keen to see our Villages platform fly then become a Villages Champ. You will be the first to see the platform and play a role in establishing a world first! Put yourself at the centre of your neighbourhood and use Villages to communicate and organise online with your neighbours, look after your neighbours, share stuff and skills and build community. Right when we need these things most! Register interest in becoming a champ here: https://bhive.coop/get-involved/
