President’s report
We had the pleasure of receiving an update from the recently returned team from Timor Leste on the progress of our club’s University scholarship holder Agripina. See below for the report.
Agripina Mendonca Salsinha

Course focus this semester:
  • pregnancy and delivery - care of babies
  • ante natal care and post-partum for mothers
  • family planning
  • requirement to assist at 30 deliveries
Agripina indicated she’s very excited about this and hopes to go back to Maubisse hospital but this depends on the university. She must apply and is not placed automatically as a private student. Since 2017 there have been 60 deliveries at the Maubisse hospital and district hospitals.

Agripina has provided her transcripts and these have been forwarded to the club. However the lecturer is still to provide results for health management.

Doing well in:
  • post-partum and delivery
  • ante natal care

Most challenging:
  • facing new people in Alieu
  • tabulation of data and health promotion to the community

Fieldwork:
  • begins next week for 2 months in Alieu
  • costs [approx. $200 USD] are already covered by scholarship funds

Current accommodation:
  • Lives with mother and 4 siblings. Father passed away in 2018. Helps look after siblings, and studies in bedroom. Helps to support the family financially.

Comments:
  • plans to attend English course but postponed because of field work
  • likes music but limited time to participate in activities.

Rotary leadership training day.
Please register as per last week’s bulletin for Sunday April 7

Futsal team support
The Futsal team (Afghani and Sudanese boys) the club is sponsoring has had 6 wins from 6, with the finals commencing this Tuesday night at the Futsal Institute at 6.30pm. Come along to show your support.

Director’s reports
Cathie-Lightning Reef primary School BBQ lunch April 5-need to know who will be there as it will be a requirement for a WWC and form 3

Judy-Thanked members for their support for Wayne and Linda. Casseroles, garden assistance and dog walking are much appreciated.

Ted-indicated that there is a waiting list for the Friday market of more than 20, with 244 sites on Friday and over 100 on Sunday.

Ray- has the RFE team and schedule well and truly under control. Will be looking for support to do some more baling of the knitted gods and transfer of bags from John Cannon’s shed.

Toni and Adrian attended the President Elects leadership day in Ballarat. The major take home for Adrian was, “You can’t destroy the club in one year!”

Geoff- Informed members of the Board’s decision to support the Discovery Centre’s school holiday in Bendigo with a contribution of $3,200.

Doug- has the 11 dragons under control and is excited about Easter

Guest Speaker
Gordon (in a last minute swap with Cr Matt Emond) provided us with an update on two major projects he is involved with.
In 1992, when he was DG, Gordon and his team set out to raise $2 million for a Bone Marrow Donor Institute House. They raised $4million and in 1994 the BMDI house was opened at the Royal Children’s Hospital. An older building in Blackwood St, Nth Melbourne was converted into apartments for families from regional Victoria and Tasmania. Up to 11 families can stay for up to 8 months if necessary. There is now a need for more apartments, so a new residence for 22 is required. One option for expansion is sell the existing building and use the funds for a new facility nearer to the hospital.  The fund raising group is 3 Rotarians and 3 from Fight Cancer to oversee the project.
Gordon did indicate that there will be a request to all clubs in the District for support.
The second major project is the Aspire Foundation, which hasn’t proceeded as fast as the organisers would like due to a “slow Federal response for funding”, (a total of $12 million is required) With state and Diocese support the Stage 1 of the project will be able to proceed with a coffee shop and theatre in the round. Gordon emphasized that this will be a Multi Faith facility, with building to be commenced “soon” with an expected completion of Stage 1 by Easter 2020.

Request from Foodshare
Hi Graeme,

Thanks for asking the Bendigo Sandhurst and other local Rotary Clubs if there are any volunteers who could help Bendigo Foodshare on either Thursday 4th April 12.30-5 pm, or on Sat 13th April from 12.30 to 5pm to sort and inventory 11 pallets of donated supermarket goods.

We need about 20 volunteers, who don't mind lifting, sorting and restocking or documenting the very large number of items so that we can then let all our agencies know what is available for them to take.

The items will then be made available to our 90 or so schools, emergency relief and community organisations for their clients.

Any assistance would be gratefully received. Please ask potential volunteers to let our warehouse Coordinator (Annie Constable) know their availability on 5444 3409 (open weekday mornings, or they can leave a message). We need to know volunteer details by Thursday 4th so that we can confirm the workathon.

The address is Shed 2, 43 A Havilah Rd, Long Gully.

Requirements are stout, closed toe shoes and comfortable clothing to suit the weather. Hi Viz vest will be provided if needed. People need to be prepared to get grubby with all the handling of boxes and individual items- everything from hardware to tinned food.

Thanks so much,
