President's Message

Congratulations Bendigo South.
Silvie Paladino and the Victorian Welsh Male Choir at Ulumbarra was a world class afternoon. Silvie is certainly in that “I’d walk over crushed glass [or fiery coals]” class.  “Worth every cent”, said Bernadette.

And, when the audience joined in at the invitation of the musical director, we discovered our Nick Christian has a voice to match those choristers.

Board Meeting [September 11] Highlights:

  • We give notice to rescind our motion of August 9 re Child Wellbeing.
    • [This means that we’re moving from the “knee jerk”, “all bets are off” position towards a common sense, clever response to the Acts].

  • Ron Payne of Eaglehawk Rotary Club has arranged for David Whiting District Governance officer to attend at Kangaroo Flat Rotary Club rooms 6:30 PM Monday evening September 25th:

  • Funding approved for Timor-Leste Knitting Project
    • [Open Day catering and on-going support]

  • The new Bendigo Dragon will NOT have RCoBS logos emblazoned, as one member suggested. Funding approved according to submitted paper.

  • Christian Medical College India supported as of August 9, 2017.

President George sneaked in an “Addendum to Report” as a “one page” strategic planning comment:

He reminded us that:

  • Rotarians pay out of their own pocket, for the privilege of volunteering and donating their own time and resources under the banner of Rotary International.

  • A survey of 20,000 Rotarians January 2017 indicated that:
    • The top benefits of membership are:
      • Positively Impacting Local Community, and,
      • Friendship and Fellowship.

  • RCoBS President’s theme for 2017 – 2018 is Local and Youth

George’s main “brief” included:

  • Increase support of local schools.

  • Respect Strategic Plan 2013 -16, and review < November 15
    • Include collaborative support of clubs in our clusters.

  • Re-write & upgrade website to RCoBS Markets instead of RCoBS.

  • Greet any [acceptable] membership enquires “with open arms”.

  • Maubisse:
    • Increase funding of BMFC scholarships.
    • Respect members’ other projects/ambitions

  • Appoint a Rotary International “Citation” member.

  • Appoint a President Elect
    • DG visit November 15, 2017.

Details of the minutes are available on ClubRunner, when our deputy Paul Henderson has time to write them up.

Guest Speaker

Mikaeli Howden, first year University [Teaching] student is on her way, not only in life, but also, to Cambodia in November to teach English:

We were impressed with her delightful presentation of the family, sibs, parents and grand-parents, all demonstrating her credentials as a true blue Bendigonian.

Long term, Mikaeli has family, Bendigo and Primary teaching in her sights.

Once in a while we get an opportunity of investing in a “target”, to assure the future of Bendigo.  Next step is the board paper up in October.

DIK:
Big thanks to Graeme [VW Amarok],and Kevin [Trailer] for transporting ninety four striped bags of donations, from George’s back verandah, to
DIK Footscray, today Thursday.

Bob Glindeman and DIK are “on the move”:
He’s moving one shed along towards Somerville Road, in response to a better lease deal.

He’s looking for volunteers for day[s] in The West:
Three vehicles
Ten to fifteen volunteers
On site 08:30 – 15:30
Think about it, please.

Meantime
I need to take two weeks of as sick leave

George

(Editors note: George has tried valiantly with this report from his sick bed. Take it easy and get well.)
