Club Activities
Such a relaxed chatty meeting, that Doug the Chair suddenly realized that we were ten minutes into game time before he opened play.

Reports and News

Rob Rosaia informed us that takings were down at our Groovin’ The Moo catering, in spite of Gerard’s persuasive spruiking and teams of generous Rotarians.

Social Committee have published minutes of their last meeting.

Nick Christian volunteered “Nothing to say” when coaxed to speak on The Budget.

And, yet again, Cathie is a grandmother.

Ever the agronomist, Ted is watching the effect of Autumn rains, as he plots tree planting working bees at OTIS retreats.

Lumberjacks and Rotarians will be welcome at the estate of John Cannon, to split and haul timber to Camp Getaway one Saturday, after MUNA date.

MUNA looms, the last weekend in May for those keen to join the RR catering team.

Continuing the Merry, Merry Month of May, Graeme is representing us at Goldfields Clusters Meeting Mothers’ Day, at Camp Getaway, and, Rotary enthusiasts are invited to join him for District Assembly Sunday May 20th, at Melton.

Especially for RCoBS travellers, Graeme and John Cannon have designs for refreshment of our club banner stocks.

Saturday Night and Groovin the Moo

Ample members turned up to help, in fact we were falling over ourselves in the early part.

It was bedlam between 9.30pm and 11.15pm. All hands on deck, Maurice's BBQ management was placed under extreme strain, with even the Gas bottle freezing at an
inconvenient moment. Kevin came to the rescue with a bucket of hot water and then the cry went up "what's all this water underfoot.

The marquee was assembled by a crack team and only three people had to read the written instructions, dis-assembly was decidedly dangerous if you didn't keep your
wits about you and duck at the appropriate times.

We served 100kg of hot well cooked sausages and 160 vegie burgers all on 10 dozen loaves of Bread.

We also sold about 15 slabs of soft drink and water.

Guest Speaker
Our guest speaker was Anthea Taylor, a ten-pound Pom from Kent at the age of eight years, the youngest of seven, and now generous stalwart of “Seeds Bendigo”, arriving via Echuca, Kyabram and Ballarat.

Anthea, an experienced primary school teacher and some-time primary school chaplain is now coordinator of the “Peoples’ Pantry’ project in Bendigo, “blessed” by the Anglican Diocese, operating out of Saint Mathews’ Church in Long Gully, along with Pastor Dave Fagg.

"Peoples' Pantry" is successfully offering twenty-five ‘households’ food availability and security, opportunities for socialization and means to resolve cycles of generational poverty.

Anthea the succession planner, is “upskilling” one member as novice project coordinator.

The key element of the project is that it is not a “handout to passive recipients.”  Rather, the households must donate ten dollars per school term and are more than welcome to work in the kitchen, and community garden.

Our local FoodShare, FoodBank out of Melbourne, “on the road again” with a refrigerated vehicle, and now an anonymous regular donor of fresh fruit and vegs are all “in on the act”.

We acknowledge Glenn Reilly providing "Peoples' Pantry" with a ‘fridge/freezer funded by our club, which has proved essential.

Prompted, Anthea informed us that "Peoples' Pantry" needs secure storage space at Saint Mathews’ [is that tautology, a need for security in a Church Hall?], she dreaming of new cupboards.

“An open and shut case”.

She has a grant application in, with a FAQ expectation of reward.

Our Board may have opportunity to continue that conversation.

Jokes
My neighbour knocked on my door at 2:30am this morning.
Can you believe that 2:30am?!
Luckily for him I was still up playing my Bagpipes.
..........................................................................................................

As a bagpiper, I play many gigs. Recently I was asked by a funeral director to play at a graveside service for a homeless man.  He had no family or friends, so the service was to be at a pauper's cemetery in the Kentucky back country.

As I was not familiar with the backwoods, I got lost and, being a typical man, I didn't stop for directions.

I finally arrived an hour late and saw the funeral guy had evidently gone and the hearse was nowhere in sight.  There were only the diggers and crew left and they were eating lunch.

I felt badly and apologized to the men for being late. I went to the side of the grave and looked down and the vault lid was already in place. I didn't know what else to do, so I started to play.

The workers put down their lunches and began to gather around. I played out my heart and soul for this man with no family and friends.I played like I've never played before for this homeless man.

And as I played 'Amazing Grace,' the workers began to weep. They wept, I wept, we all wept together. When I finished I packed up my bagpipes and started for my car. Though my head hung low, my heart was full.

As I opened the door to my car, I heard one of the workers say, "I never seen nothin' like that before and I've been putting in septic tanks for twenty years."

Apparently I'm still lost....
